I liked the pictures that were "ominous". Basically, photos soon before the big event happened. Also

Not a photo, but this is a must watch
A Trip Down Market Street 1906 San Francisco
This film from 1906 in downtown San Francisco was made 4 days before the great earthquake destroyed the city at 5:12 AM on April 18th, 1906. It is filmed from the front of a cable car, heading east toward the ferry terminal building, which is the tower in the background (which survived the quake and still stands today). Filmed by the Miles Brothers, 14 April, 1906

The people wandering that street in SF sure do a lot of cutting in front of those cable cars.

Holy crap, I didn't even know a C 130 could land on a carrier. That's crazy.

On August 13, 1961, the Communist government of East Germany began to build a barbed wire and concrete "Antifascistischer Schutzwall," or "antifascist bulwark," between East and West Berlin. The official purpose of this Berlin Wall was to keep Western "fascists" from entering East Germany and undermining the socialist state, but it primarily served the objective of stemming mass defections from East to West.

The SS United States deserves a happier picture than that. Built in 1952 she was operated until 1969. On her maiden voyage she set the eastbound speed record of 35.59 knots from New York to Cornwall, UK and the return record still stands at 34.51 knots (3 days 12 hours) which means she has held the Blue Riband for the fasting transatlantic crossing for 61 years now.
Pretty sure she's still faster than any modern large ship (even a Nimitz class aircraft carrier).

Did a report on this in middle school. Some of the worst conditions ever.

quote:Very impressive, but I've heard a Nimitz class carrier can do 50+ knots. Maybe one of you squids can verify this?

Beautiful ship, I've never seen or read anything about it.

Schumann made his break for freedom to join his family which had fled earlier to West Berlin. Schumann, who was immortalized in this photograph as he leapt across the barbed wire fence that became the Berlin Wall, hanged himself from a tree June 20, 1998 near his garden, police said.
