How does this work? I didn't realize this was a thing people did. Is he not insurable himself? And why would you potentially open yourself up to liability or rate hikes if he makes a claim on your policy?

I guess I didn’t explain this well. He’s my wife’s cousin that is a dual citizen and taking college courses while living with us. The car is in his name but to keep his insurance reasonable we put him under ours.
As pointed out, you get what you pay for that doesn’t mean an innocent driver should get screwed.

Why do people think that this is an excuse to not carry comp and collision.

Insurance only pays what is worth.

I have a 2012 Honda Van, the resale value of it is less than what my comp and collision premium is. Why should I insure it when the insurance is going to give me less than what the premiums I pay for it?

Is the cousin something like a 19 year old from Estonia? Or is the cousin like a 30 year old from Shreveport?

Hire a lawyer.
If you were hurt, go to the doctor.

I hope you weren’t hurt and if you weren’t, don’t say that you were. But if you don’t have an injury claim, you are going to get screwed on the property damage because even if you win you will have to pay the lawyer, and you may have trouble finding a lawyer to take a property damage only case.
The insurance companies know this and will take full advantage of it.

You don’t have an insurable interest so you may not even have a valid contract. It’s difficult to believe that an insurer would issue a policy if the application was completed truthfully.

Bro just pay your deductible, let your insurance fix it and they will recoup on the backside and refund your deductible.

This shite ain’t rocket science.

Bro, that would be excellent advice except he doesn't have any collision coverage. He said:

No collision or comp as it's a 2016 Kia Soul.

So Kia owner has no choice but (1) try to recover from the POS who caused the accident and their liability insurer or (2) eat it.

Why no citation issued?
And why does it matter if the roommate is a dual citizen?
And why are you and your wife so stupid?

You sure about that. My insurance for that vehicle was running about 1,200 for full coverage every 6 months. The sale value of the vehicle with 271k miles is about 1,000 dollars. I might be able to get 2k on a good day.

Unless State Farm was planning on cutting a check for 7,000 or 8,000 dollars why would I keep paying a thousand dollars more every 6 months for full coverage.
