Installing TV Mount on exterior wall. Should I cut the siding?

Have some siding on the exterior wall where I want the TV. Should I cut out around the stud to drill into it to hang the mount or can I drill straight through the siding itself into the stud?
Any advice is appreciated. Mods I placed this on the OT because I was hoping for more eyeballs. Though I'm guessing I'll get more DV as well

Just find the studs and drill into them.

Straight through, you may want a few longer screws though

I've done this. Go straight to siding.
ETA: never mind its vinyl. Find studs

You may want to predrill through the siding to prevent splitting or cracking.
Especially if it's older and more brittle.

Drill then lag screws in to studs. Cut a hole for both cable and electrical cord to hide from view. Fish both from attic thru plate

Wouldn't screwing a bracket through the siding pinch the siding, and you'd be able to see the bending siding around the bracket?

I will be hanging a 50" flat panel TV on this mount and I've already had an electrician out to install a weatherproof covered GFCI where I want the mount hung.
He cut out around the outlet and placed a mold around it. I'm just wondering if I'll run into long term problems if I don't do the same for the mount where it hits the wall...

Determine studs from inside. Measure from window or door. That’s going to give you a measuring point from outside.
You should cut out a base of 3/4" cabinet grade wood panel large enough to be 1"larger than your mount. Use this to mark the cut-out on your vinyl. Cut your vinyl with a Drexel 1/4" larger all the way around. You can purchase a piece of vinyl J channel trim and cut pieces to fit and slide in around the siding.
Use lag screws to secure the 3/4" thick panel to the studs. Countersink the openings to accommodate the head and a washer. Caulk between the board and your vinyl trim. Then put on a coat of exterior enamel paint. If it needs it, add a second coat.
When dry, install your mount with lag screws.

Bookmarked. I'm planning on doing this next spring when the weather improves. Good thread.

Go thru the siding and predrill holes for lag screws. Caulk so you can prevent moisture from getting behind siding.

Second this. I used something like this to mount a flag pole hanger. It worked great.

Check out mbs.com They have several styles and colors to match your application. It seems like the split block would be the best model for what your job.

I didn't. Just drilled through to the studs and mounted it.
