How come gangbangers with multiple murders don't fall under the serial killer umbrella?

A serial killers normally follow a set pattern, and have a cooling off period between murders. Killing is kind of like a hobby to them.

Gang bangers kill with a motive (drugs, beef, gang warfare)

There have been some hybrids. There was a female serial killer in California who murdered elderly men for their social security benefits

They have a mountain of evidence against him. Unless his lawyer gets most of it excluded he has no chance of beating this.

There was a reality tv crime series "Cold Justice" where two females (one a former prosecutor, the other a crime scene investigator) would try to crack cold cases in towns where local authorities were at a dead end (no pun intended) and asked for their help.

I learned from that prosecutor that a case with say 20 pieces of "circumstantial evidence" that paints the entire picture/timeline is far more powerful (& winnable) than a case with only one link of "hard evidence" (like semen/hair/skin DNA, video footage, or "forced" confession) as the defense might present a reasonable explanation for the prosecutor's sole link.

That’s kind of semantics. For those, they are killing for money, and the killing is just a means to an end. The way we actually talk about serial killers, the killing is the means and the end. And usually had a sexual or sadistic component. Not always, just in general.

Long Island serial killer suspect Rex Heuermann left his wife's hair on three of the prostitutes he is accused of murdering and his own DNA on another's body, prosecutors have revealed…

His wife's DNA was found on three of the victims' bodies
One of his own hairs was found on one of the victims' bodies
Cell phone calls made from a burner phone to the victims were traced to his office
A call made to one of the victims' sisters after she died was traced to his office
His Tinder profile with photos of him was linked to the burner phone
His Chevrolet pick-up truck was seen by witness to one victim's disappearance
He matches description of 'ogre' like man seen with one victim before she vanished…

…In January this year, after watching Heuermann and his family since last March, the detectives in the case seized a pizza box he'd thrown in the trash outside his Manhattan office.

His DNA from one of the crusts was a 99.6 percent match to a male hair found at the bottom of the burlap sack one of the victims was found in.

We had the FBI surveilling the defendant, this individual that continued to patronize sex workers at all hours of the night, continued to use fictitious identities, burner phones, as we worked through the case and got closer and closer, suddenly the balance tips in favor of public safety.

It seems like it tipped in favor of public safety a while back. Were they waiting to catch him in the act of killing someone???

I was thinking that myself. They’ve been on him since March? To get more evidence? Surely they’ve been on him close enough where they would strep in and prevent a potential murder even if they hadn’t gathered all the evidence they thought they needed for a slam dunk conviction, no? Save a life and take your chances with what you’ve got rather than sacrifice another victim to make a stronger case? Surely.

This thinking is why it took longer to catch Derek Todd Lee.

I could be wrong, but I think the serial killer with the most kills (at least in the US) is black. And dude was able to draw pictures of every woman he killed. He had a gift and a curse. But the profile of a stereotypical serial killer was created in the early 70s, but they created it only on the information they had.

Murders involving black people didn't get the attention that a string of white people being killed did. That's just a fact. I think there was one in Atlanta who killed kids. The DC sniper was black so yeah, you really can't rule out any race when searching for a serial killer.

Yes, but several years ago. I thought they were supposed to have a new season, but I don't think it ever came out.

I’ve heard conflicting reports too. Keeping my fingers crossed. I dislike most shite on tv but that was riveting.

I'm waiting for the "red-flags" testimonies/creepy-anecdotes from friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, etc to start coming out where he said or did some bizarre shite that, in retrospect, make complete sense now.

Mindhunter...

Loved that series... but the director wasn't making enough money for the time he spent on it and moved on to other things... shame cause it was incredibly good. But I get it from his standpoint.

100% this dude didn’t stop killing people. He just got better at hiding the bodies.

Possibly/probably. I mean he knew he couldn't dump bodies on Gilgo Beach anymore after 2010. He'd have been stupid if he thought that. So he may have picked a new dumping ground.
