Even Gandhi disagrees with you and he was against the partition. Hell, he had issues in the work camps in South Africa based along religous divide. His unification of the two groups was a small victory for tolerance. It obviously was something that inspired him on his return to India. To pretend they were peacefully coexisting in India prior to the British is utter bullshite though. The wars of the "feuding prince's" was based largely along religous lines and gave rise to female infanticide. This was done so limited food supplies could take of their ALL MALE armies. I would hardly call that a small detail. FWIW, the fighting took place mainly in NW India near a region called Kashmir. They occurred BEFORE the British Raj.

Slightly more complicated than that. If you know your gov't has a very tenuous hold on power in a country that is a powder keg...you've got to pick and choose your battles.
One false move by the gov't and the entire country goes full blown Libya/Syria.
Libya and Syria have/had populations of 7M and 18M ppl respectively. Can you imagine the humanitarian crisis that would be a nation of 197M deep in the throes of a civil war?

Now that's what the Indians are saying, what the Pakistanis are tweeting and are providing video is different. They claim that the Indian pilots dropped their bombs, in a wooden field miles from the target, as soon as they saw the F-16s coming to intercept them.
A top Pakistan air force general is calling the Indian air force out on twitter.
