Chris Rose saw New Orleans for what she was, before and after Katrina, and he could flat out write. It’s the folks on the outer edges of the bell curve who are tormented the most by the nastiness in the world, and therefore struggle the most, and he was nearer the genius side than the rest of us. If he never does another positive thing in his life, his writing positively impacted more people than most of us ever will.

Incredibly depressing article on Chris Rose
i read it this morning, i disagree that it was depressing or sad. he says a couple times he's happier than he ever has been in his life. terminal illness notwithstanding, we would all be fortunate to be able to say that

the dude was a mess, and now he's not. thats a happy ending

No thanks. Not wasting my time on the musings of some guy with depression problems

What an incredibly tone deaf thing to say. I get he made choices that led him to this point, but the fact we have a male talking about any of this shite in public should be appreciated.

Many guys (myself included) are struggling with any number of things from depression to anxiety or dealing with wives who are nothing more than roommates at this point and see their husband's as the only things keeping from being happy on a daily basis because that's what social media tells them to believe.

but dudes have been told to shut the frick up and go on. And we do. And it's why the leading cause of death for guys under 45 is suicide. So whenever there's something out there like this I'll always appreciate it, regardless of the circumstances.

Crap that is happening in our country is taking a toll on us all. Where did the money for mental health go? People are suffering and have no resources.

Reagan played a big part in ending mental institutions. To go along with him granting amnesty to illegals and turning California blue.

Bobby Jindal when he was governor closed lots of mental health funding in Louisiana.

It is sad. Chris is a gifted writer who put out poignant and moving pieces. But it did not happen to him. He made every choice that got him where he is.

Addiction and the depression that often causes it are sad but until you accept the idea it is your decision at the base to get better all the counseling, support and assistance in the world will not do a damn thing. He kept getting hired again and again from the TP to Gambit to Fox8 to Rouses because folks loved him and he squandered every chance.

Chris had a lot of folks spend a lot of time and money trying to help him and he kept making the wrong choices.

Again, tragic, but it did not "happen" to him. I do not post this to slam Chris. I want him to be better. But I hate seeing someone say this happened to him.

By the way, I was closer to this for a while as I knew Kelly since childhood.

You nailed it.

It was so strange, the articles for the first year were great, but it seemed like he had Sliver By The River Guilt. And his downfall was self-inflicted.

Wish him well. He was skilled.

I always enjoyed his writing and especially the post Katrina stuff. It was highly relatable and poignant in a way that he captured unlikely anyone else

I always got the sense with him that he was some sort of gonzo journalist who just wanted to write freelance with his own spin and without answering to anyone. Kind of a New Orleans based Hunter S Thompson.

I hate to hear about his medical issues and wish him well.

dump her. You aren't going to jail for divorce. It'll be expensive, but its hard to have sympathy for a "man" who enables his own misery by staying with a spouse who has so little use for him. And if its truly leading you to suicidal thoughts, then shame on you. Either get away from the one doing you harm or learn not to let her behavior harm you.

yeah well, JBE was in office for 8 years. Did he not fund mental health initiatives? Hard to keep blaming the (R) guy whose term ended in 2016, when the (D) guy was in office just as long and much more recently.

I'd heard he'd gone off the rails a while back. I know he had family issues and a drug problem.

I loved his post-Katrina articles, and bought One Dead in Attic as soon as it came out.

quote:

DEAR America,

I suppose we should introduce ourselves: We’re South Louisiana.

We have arrived on your doorstep on short notice and we apologize for that, but we never were much for waiting around for invitations. We’re not much on formalities like that.

And we might be staying around your town for a while, enrolling in your schools and looking for jobs, so we wanted to tell you a few things about us. We know you didn’t ask for this and neither did we, so we’re just going to have to make the best of it.

First of all, we thank you. For your money, your water, your food, your prayers, your boats and buses and the men and women of your National Guards, fire departments, hospitals and everyone else who has come to our rescue.

We’re a fiercely proud and independent people, and we don’t cotton much to outside interference, but we’re not ashamed to accept help when we need it. And right now, we need it.

Just don’t get carried away. For instance, once we get around to fishing again, don’t try to tell us what kind of lures work best in your waters.

We’re not going to listen. We’re stubborn that way.

You probably already know that we talk funny and listen to strange music and eat things you’d probably hire an exterminator to get out of your yard.

We dance even if there’s no radio. We drink at funerals. We talk too much and laugh too loud and live too large and, frankly, we’re suspicious of others who don’t.

But we’ll try not to judge you while we’re in your town.

Everybody loves their home, we know that. But we love South Louisiana with a ferocity that borders on the pathological. Sometimes we bury our dead in LSU sweatshirts.

Often we don’t make sense. You may wonder why, for instance – if we could only carry one small bag of belongings with us on our journey to your state – why in God’s name did we bring a pair of shrimp boots?

We can’t really explain that. It is what it is.

You’ve probably heard that many of us stayed behind. As bad as it is, many of us cannot fathom a life outside of our border, out in that place we call Elsewhere.

The only way you can understand that is if you have been there, and so many of you have. So you realize that when you strip away all the craziness and bars and parades and music and architecture and all that hooey, really, the best thing about where we come from is us.
We are what made this place a national treasure. We’re good people. And don’t be afraid to ask us how to pronounce our names. It happens all the time. When you meet us now and you look into our eyes, you will see the saddest story ever told. Our hearts are broken into a thousand pieces.

But don’t pity us. We’re gonna make it. We’re resilient. After all, we’ve been rooting for the Saints for 35 years. That’s got to count for something.

OK, maybe something else you should know is that we make jokes at inappropriate times.
But what the hell.

And one more thing: In our part of the country, we’re used to having visitors. It’s our way of life.

So when all this is over and we move back home, we will repay to you the hospitality and generosity of spirit you offer to us in this season of our despair.

That is our promise. That is our faith.

Yeah the hat was passed a few times and access to money and resources were never the problem. He simply wasnt interested in getting help.

I didnt know him personally, but If you ever saw Chris hold court at a dive bar in the Marigny or Bywater (at 2 in the afternoon) then you saw a man in his element.

The guy was our own little Tony Bourdain for a while. He could know what you were thinking about before you thought it. I knew he fell off grid and had booze issues, but man that’s a rough 20 years. End must be nigh if he let T-P publish that.
