Would it apply to highway/interstate traffic inner city multi lane roads as well?

Absolutely. And I’d go even further…

1. A law making it illegal to go under the speed limit in any lane other than the LH lane.

2. Illegal to drive less than 5 MPH below the speed limit in any lane.

3. Illegal for vehicles either more than two axles to drive in any lane other than the LH lane.

4. Illegal to remain in the LH lane other than passing a vehicle in your immediate surroundings.

This is true. It needs to be enforced in a much stricter fashion. Slow driving in the passing lane is one of the most dangerous driving habits.

Absolutely. I-65 through Alabama is a prime example. I had to travel back from Pensacola Friday. Most of it is two line and heavy traffic, especially this time of the year, is the norm. The problem is the big trucks and guys pulling campers. The big trucks try passing each other even though neither are actually able to do 70, the posted speed limit, and the faster truck only goes about 2/10 of a mile faster so it takes miles for one to pass the other, and that’s if they don’t hit any hills where they both lose momentum and bring both lanes down to 60 MPH. And as for the camper guys, they should be barred from the interstate all together because they’re slower than the big trucks. And while all this is going on, traffic is piling up behind them. That’s when things get dangerous on the interstate.

Absolutely. Someone mentioned it's against the law for these types of vehicles to enter the passing lane in some states. I'd welcome such a law here in Bama.

We actually have a version of this law in Alabama. I can’t remember the exact way it’s worded, but I think it limits how long a vehicle can remain in the LH lane to something like half a mile? The problem is the law isn’t enforced.

That's not entirely true...i.e. semis are ALL speed limited at 10-15 km LOWER than any posted speed limits so it's VERY rare to witness any truck in the left lanes ! Also the requirements to obtain a drivers lic. are very strict, costly and time consuming so the vast majority of 'drivers' follow the driving regulations to a T. The lane disciplin is extraordinary !

this is the primary problem. Don’t get on the fricking interstate if you won’t or can’t drive the speed limit. Yesterday I picked up a big plum tree in BR from a friend and had to drive it back to Hammond and I didn’t want it getting all torn up at 70mph…so I took 190.

It’s an expressway for direct travel at expressway speed. There are other ways to get point A to B for slower travel

Driving slower than posted in the fast lane should be a capital offense.

I think it would be difficult to enforce something like this for ALL vehicles, but limiting it to large vehicles like semis and people pulling a trailer would be easier to enforce because it's less subjective.

Not enough lanes to implement but wish there were.

Definitely doesn’t need to be a “law”

Why TF would you want another law? The nanny state is already waaay too big. The less the government accomplishes, the better it is for all of us. Laws and the federal gumment are not the saviors and they are not your friend.

It’s wouldn’t need to be if cops actually enforced. Instead they’ll write tickets to the cars zooming past the 18 wheeler instead of the 18 wheeler that just spent 15 miles of interstate driving 63 holding up traffic.

No, there's too much room for perosnal judgment by a cop for that

The answer isn't more regulation. The answer is better drivers/more education

Stop giving Johnny Law more reasons to frick us

It's called the speed limit, meaning, that's as fast as you are allowed to go without possibly getting a ticket. It's not the mandatory speed. Many places have a minimum speed posted as well. Maybe that's what you want enforced.

I keep seeing others refer to it as the "fast lane". It's not the fast lane, it is the passing lane. If a driver is making a legal pass and get's back over when the pass is safely completed, it doesn't matter how fast they are going as long as it's over the posted minimum speed.

I got pulled over in Alabama just a few months ago for driving in passing lane, there wasn’t any other cars around me for at least a mile or so. Come to find out when you get in passing lane you can only stay there for 1.5 miles

Yes but enforcement is the problem. Hard to catch. Hard to enforce. And that’s if highway patrol is even trying and they mostly aren’t.
