Well, they were. Now women and illegals have flooded the workforce with too many workers. It’s all simple economics.

No way Al could be fat.
Remember, he played H.S, football and scored 4 touchdowns in one game for good ole Polk High.

1980’s Al Bundy wasn’t affording that house either.
Homer Simpson is depicted as a nitwit, but via some version of failing upward works a high profile job in a nuclear power plant, to the point where the CEO knows him by name.
Plugging plot holes wasn’t a thing in early sitcoms and only started in the internet and message board era, which Married With Children “escaped” being a part of.
An post-internet example here is Shameless, where a plot point to them having a house at all is that grandma is buried in the back yard and it’s actually her social security checks paying the note.

IMO, this was the start of the turn against the American white male. TV started making the dad look like a bumbling idiot
Is uncle Phil in there? The self man lawyer turned judge that could afford a house in Bel Air. How does that fit into your characterization?

No, they were middle/working class.

Al was a shoe salesman. I seriously doubt they could just live off his salary,
Homer worked at a Nuclear Plant. Commerical operators make 150K base per year, and over 175K+ after OT.
