I understand your love and passion for old war history. But you don't have to start a thread about everything.

You're right, I don't. But I will.

I’d say Omar Bradley should be in the discussion as well.

If there is a general in military history who is and will always be overrated, it's General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. With that said, I'm limiting my list to those who held tactical command. So that precludes men like Eisenhower, MacArthur, Marshall, King, and Nimitz from being included.

MacArthur?

Arguably one of the most polarizing figures in American military history. While it’s become in vogue to focus solely on his failures, primarily the Philippine campaign of 1941-42 and later his failure to recognize the scope of the Chinese offensive in winter 1950 during the Korean War, it can’t be ignored his campaigns in New Guinea and later the Philippines were highly successful and instrumental in retaking those areas from the Japanese.

You forget that in WWI MacArthur served with distinction in the trenches with the 42nd Infantry division. And Marshall commanded a platoon in the 30th Infantry Regiment during Philippine–American War.

Would he be considered the tactical commander for desert storm? He was the CENTCOM commander responsible for the whole AOR. Of course, during the war he was hyperfocused on ejecting Iraq from Kuwait. Strategically he did a great job of holding the coalition together.

I do not forget. He was a brigade commander and briefly commanded the 42nd.

But he is best remembered for his role as Chief of Staff of the United States Army during World War II.

You know, Eisenhower was considered a very very very good football coach when he was early on in his career. He had to fight to get control of his career because I believe he was stationed in Texas and they were like…. Your too good at this to go do anything else
