Great for when you have young kids who are really enthused about it. I loved ours during that time. But once they get older (they grow up quick) and the playful swimming stops it becomes a huge pain in the azz. So while I don’t regret having one when we did I’ll never do it again.

We have a 21000 gallon pool with a water fall. We had it built 9 years ago. I love the pool and use it quite a bit. I used to maintain the pool myself but it is a chore. I have someone that comes once a week to maintain it now. Your electric bill will increase quite a bit and the cost of maintaining is significant. You can count on it costing you a minimum of $300 to $400 a month.

If you don't have a lot of leaves to fall in, they are great.
Maintenance other than keeping leaves out is easy. I didn't mind testing and dosing the water.

No regret.
I like the aesthetics of it even if I don’t use it much.
I don’t think the maintenance is that big of an issue unless you have trees that overhang it.
Course I can fix any mechanical issue that arises as well so no need for expensive repairmen.

Never had one and likely never will, especially at my age.
I have several friends that have had in-ground pools over the years and it seems to be a pretty even split between love it or wish they'd never done it.
The ones that regret it cite cost of maintenance and lack of use with kids grown and out the house.

My best friends grandparents (mid 50's at the time) had one 2 miles away from me growing up. 2 Brothers I played baseball with a year apart. From ages about 11 to 19 we used it all the time. This was in the 90's. A few times the whole baseball team went out there. After the brothers grew up and got married, the grandparents told them if they didn't come maintain it, it would get filled in. It got filled in shortly after and this was after they had kids of their own. Those brothers even had 2 cousins our age that got married and had kids I didn't know as well but we all lived in the same small town. I guess the grandparents got too old to care about seeing the great grand kids in it and none of the 2 brothers or their cousins cared enough to put out the effort to maintain it.

The only way to have a pool is to buy a house with one already. The mfs are expensive to install
