I had the opposite experience. Finally bought a good robot and started handling the chemistry myself. Started doing my own in the background before firing the final pool company. My balance was consistently out of whack with them.
Nowadays, I do it myself and no problems.

We have people visiting all the time and no one complains. I won’t get in water below 86 for the most part. December/January when it’s 70 out 90 degree water hits perfect.

I bought a house with the pool and I do like it more than I hate it. The only thing I really hate about it is the previous owner planet three creat Myrtles north of the pool and every north wind I’m out there every day dipping white flowers out of that motherfricker.
It it’s around 20,000 gallons so it’s not overly big.
Maintaining the chemicals is easy.

I'm in a love/hate relationship with my pool. I love when it's nice and clear. It has a very specific color of blue. I have golfing sunglasses that accentuate any brown or green and so when my wife looks at it and says, it looks great, I can slip on these glasses and see just how great it is, or not. If there's ANY beginnings of algea, I see it immediately.
That said, it is the bane of my existence. It is surrounded by post oaks. Weekly maintenance doesn't come close to taking care of it. More like, every damned day. So much organic matter gets in the water that it's a constant battle to keep phosphorus down.

Have a 11k gallon in ground pool. We love it. We all use it. It’s really no maintenance at all. Usually takes me about 10 minutes one day a week for testing and the dolphin vac does the rest. Super easy and no regrets.

I fought with mine for a few years before I finally gave it up. I couldn't manage to keep it clear for anything.

I used to stress over the water and those test strips that you could never get just right. For the last 8 years or so I add salt maybe 3 times a year, shock it occasionally and backwash the sand filter once a year. I got one of those cheap Chinese robots that crawls around sucking up dirt and leaves. Easy. No regrets.

We have a lanai and a pool heater.
My wife quit teaching elementary school and became a toddler swim instructor.
Makes way more and works way less.

Anytime I’ve asked people with a pool about having a pool, the first thing out their mouth is “don’t get a pool”
