Does that standard put an emphasis on time?

And what exactly is the point of being able to do 50 multiplication problems in 60 seconds? Is it truly assessing who knows them and who doesn't? Or is it teaching kids to speed through tests for fear of a timer going off? So what if a kid takes a few seconds to be sure he gets them correct?

This is basic multiplication. If you don't know these intuitively you'll never be able to solve an actual math equation.

It's no wonder so many of you are rock hard for trade schools, you cant multiply 12x8 without writing it out and long multiying.

I knew we could find a topic we could agree on.

And these are the worst types of parents to. The OP obviously isn't working with their child on their math drills and only wants to complain about the teacher.

Sad

It is to force rote memorization.

Scruffy had to do the same thing.

These problems should be known and should be able to be recalled in a split second.

So, she can’t do them all yet. She will get there eventually.

These aren’t the problems that anyone should ever have to think about. You should be able to recall your basic multiplication tables with ease just based on memory.

I concur Scruffy. These multiples happen in frequency in a day to day life.

I think the "that's how I learned 'em" mentality is fogging up logic

printed it out.

Will admit, it took me 64 seconds to do the 40. Stuttered on 2 and that's all it takes. Not an easy task at all for a 9 year old.

We did this test, but it was 100 problems in 3mins back when I did it. Always finished easily.

When I was in 4th grade we were given a sheet of about 100 multiplication problems and told to do as many as we could in a minute. I did 70 one time and my teacher paraded me around to the other 4th grade classes like I was some math genius

Did you see the problems? Answering those in 30 seconds should be nothing for someone that teaches it.
I'm guessing that is pretty close to impossible.

50 in 30 seconds, so that's roughly a bit more than a half second per problem. Looking and knowing the answer is pretty easy, but when you add in the element of writing it down, I'm just not sure it's possible.

But there are only 40 questions for what OP posted. And I just printed it out and did it under 40. If I had been studying this stuff and more used to doing it, I see no reason it couldn't be done in 30 seconds.

Yea, not sure if the OP mentioned it or not, is that something that is expected right now or maybe it's an expectation at the end of the year, but they will work on it weekly getting better and better until they reach the goal.

Sure he could, he would just need 8 minutes and three sheets of paper for his number bonds.

And that is the point.

She will know her multiplication tables forwards and backwards by the end.

Is minimum for writing your name scored a 50?
Or is the test worth 50 points total?

Sure its the former, but bonehead at my office says different.

Means you made a 95/100 for answering 45 of 50 instead of just 90% at 45/50.

It’s an expectation right now and I agree with everyone that says he should know them because you have to know multiplication tables to complete other math problems efficiently and well, you need to know them for life in general. I’ve been working with him every night since his test came home and he’s getting faster but his limiting factor seems to be writing the answers down fast enough. Heck, I can’t write them fast enough and thought the pace was insane. No one is complaining to the school, this isn’t going to make or break his overall score and I want him to work hard.
Kudos to you all that can actually get 50 in 60 seconds BTW.
