Sounds like your kid is dumb. Might as well start training him to flip burgers

It’s random problems, he knows them except for some of the 12’s

Maybe he should study the 12’s then. It is not hard.

I actually took the time to do those questions. Finished in 34 secs, though I did miss one from going fast. Kid me would of nailed it. The teacher will not count those scores if everyone fails to finish. She is just making them think fast.

This.

That table took no time at all, 60 seconds would be more than enough.

Tell him to keep working. You should be able to look at any two numbers below 12 multiplied together and instantly get the answer.

Our kid has to do this. She did say she was the only one in her class to finish in time the first week, but I think a lot of them can now. She’s decent at school, but not an extreme genius. It’s memorization, not problem solving. Have him keep practicing.

That simple math and mostly memorization. Nothing worse than seeing someone stumble over a simple math problem.

Those threads usually run 20 pages around here.

Maybe you should ask if they'll get a participation trophy.

#Snowflake.

It's sad that you don't understand what the teacher is doing with this exercise.

Is this some new standard teachers are going by or is this teacher just being unreasonable?

They are called "time-tables".... and they've been around since the beginning

The teacher is ridiculous. What does this test prove? Seems cruel to me!!!

This test has nothing to do with learning multiplication, it's just memorizing the multiplication table so you might as well treat it as the same as a spelling test.

You're not learning how to do math by doing this.

Get flash cards and practice. He'll get fast and will dividends down the road.

When I was a kid we had to memorize up to the 16 tables.

When you see 6x4 do you multiply it or do you know it intuitively?

Fwiw, you'd never have to do this under common core.

I know it intuitively, doesn't mean I know how to multiply 6x4.

Can you intuitively tell me was 186x1452 is?

Take 30 minutes from your day. Have him fill out a similar multiplication table and time him for a minute. Spend a minute (hopefully less) grading it, then give him a minute to look at it and figure out what he did wrong. In a week he'll have his multiplication tables memorized, and be a lot better at performing under a time crunch in general.

Remember his teacher isn't the ultimate responsibility for your child's education. You are.

I do remember doing this is 3rd grade, but I don't think it was graded. If its concerning to you, why don't you make your child sit and study a multiplication table every night. Why blame it on the teacher?

My kid is in 3rd grade, he knows his facts off the top of his head. He is a little on the slower side, and that's fine. But I wont blame that on the teacher, I would just work with him more to get him more confident.

I did too. My wife and I both have plenty of post grand math under our belts, know the answers by reflex and can’t get all of them in 60 seconds.

So to recape, you and your wife are incapable of doing third grade math?

You're that guy at McDonalds when my bill is $9.97 and I give you $10.02 looks at me stupidly because you can't just recognize that I would rather give you pennies then take pennies and you should give me a nickel back, aren't you?

It goes without saying, but this is not the extent of their math education. It’s a practice drill.
