t's hella good. I had a pretty good understanding of the incident and I still learned a lot. Very well done

I honestly don’t know what the obsession with the titanic. The ship sucked. It sunk on its first ever voyage. It’s embarrassing

They claimed it was unsinkable and it sunk on it’s maiden voyage and a ton of people drowned including some very wealthy well known people.

Then there’s that whole movie based on a dried up prune of a pussy throwing away a priceless gem into the ocean.

Oh and a Celin Dion song.

I wonder how long it took the titanic to make it to the ocean floor when it sank

Documentaries are typically filled with skewed information.

I made the mistake of looking that up. One moment of carelessness... I couldn't imagine even doing that job; it can't be healthy in the long run.

Not long. About 6-10 minutes

His entire schtick was that people were way too cautious and safety obsessed. Interviews with him he seemed to get off on doing things sloppy as a "haha in your face" to his critics.

His ending was just desserts. The tragedy is the innocent people he conned into getting onboard with him.

I used to do a alot of recreational diving and in the process I met a bunch of retired commercial divers. Retired meant the age of 30. Any longer and they wouldn't have survived to retire but their pay per job was unbelievable. Sometimes as much as 50 to 75 thousand per job, 10-15 thousand per day depending on the risk..They all had amazing stories. They were fearless but when the Byford Dolphin incident was brought up they became silent.

A+ rich guy name though
”Stockton Rush” reminds me of way back in the day when my dad bought a car for my sister from a guy named Pennington Shackleford III.

But the viewer's problem is how do you know which ones are legitimate?

The material Rush used for the sub was great for airplanes, horrible for subs.

There's a reason no one builds subs out of carbon fiber. His arrogant dumb arse proved it and he took a few others with him as well. And real subs don't use Playstation controllers either.

(edit) I don't blame the people that went on the dive anywhere near as much as Rush. He sold 'em a bill of goods and from the documentary, it appears he did everything he could to dodge regulations and common sense.

For me to feel safe 12,000 feet below the sea I would need a 6’ diameter sub with at least 4.5” wall thickness 52k yield strength steel.

That’s rudimentary engineering.

With this design you would be good until 14,400 feet until the steel started showing signs of yielding. 12,000 is your factor of safety.

Way too many stress concentrations.

IMO, a playstation controller wasnt the worst idea by far. It was the most tested, reliable, and durable thing on the sub.

Agreed. and didn't he have a backup? Maybe I'd want a usb/wired option.

I watched this over the weekend and enjoyed learning the history of Ocean Gate. Rush was a typical eccentric billionaire. His attitude of "You don't have an explorer mentality" toward employees who blew the whistle was pretty telling.

I thought the footage from the unaired Expedition Unknown was a great look into the operation and how Mickey Mouse the whole thing really was. Rush had the host scribbling shite on a sticky note and showing it to the divers through the window.

All that being said, the doc glossed over the fact that he made 13 successful trips to the Titanic. I know they didn't want to glamorize it, but I assumed maybe it made 1 or 2 successful trips. I googled afterwards and saw where the implosion occurred on the 14th time it reached bottom. So I would think there is some good information that could be used for the next eccentric billionaire to build upon.

frick all that. We aren't meant to be down there, period. I wouldn't go in something over engineered times 10. Nope....
