I had forgotten about the change over - actually I think we always referred to it as the civilian marksmanship program (CMP). My dad had his FFL back then and he had several folks who were t interested in owning M1s but were willing to buy them and then sell them back to us or someone in the family.
If I recall correctly, in the mid 70s they were going for $50 a rifle. Given that was a long time ago I’m not 100% on the exact price. If I went to my dad’s I could probably dig out the records or at least an old Shotgun News paper that would have the ad in it.

I think this is more of an issue with initial reporting. They acted like he expertly took out three people from 500 ft away.
What he actually did was fire a bunch into a transport van and through some office windows. That wouldn't have taken an expert

My dad had a Korean era M1 he gave me 40 years ago. I think is the eone you want in a muddy foxhole or deep in the woods because of it's simplicity, ease to clean and effectiveness. It's about the easiest rifle to move around with I own.
