I'm just not sure about Coronavirus

I'm worried about the coronavirus because the experts are saying that 200,000 people may die from this thing. The flu infects 35 million Americans each year and kills about 35,000. Most people who come down with coronavirus don't know they've had it.
According to the CDC on March 26:
...fatality was highest in persons aged =85, ranging from 10% to 27%, followed by 3% to 11% among persons aged 65–84 years, 1% to 3% among persons aged 55-64 years, <1% among persons aged 20–54 years, and no fatalities among persons aged =19 years.
Given those statistics, wouldn't it seem more reasonable to quarantine people over 65 in their homes or hospitals and have the rest of the population go about business as usual?
More than 800,000 people in the United States die from cardiovascular disease each year. Many experts agree that 95% of those deaths could be avoided by eliminating certain foods from our diets. That's four times as many people as the coronavirus may take and it happens EVERY year. But nobody is freaking out over this.
About 600,000 people die from various forms of cancer in the United States each year. Some people are freaking out over this.
About 36,000 people in the US die from a gunshot wound each year. Everybody seems to freak out over this.
Our priorities are all screwed up. I worry we're gonna wind up giving away all our civil liberties (right to assemble, right to travel freely) willingly.
Where is the voice of reason in all this?

I couldn’t care less if a 400 pound slob dies from a heart attack at 35.
Some people should die if they can’t make decisions to stay remotely healthy.
My issue is that we are protecting the weak in the gene pool. It’s worked on this planet for thousands of years yet we do whatever we can to fight it.

You don't catch cardiovascular disease because you neighbor is a fatty.

I’ve heard a similar philosophy before. Not since WWII however.

I consulted with my pastor. He said if I let him stick his thumb up my arse that I would be good

Boring argument.
Big difference between genocide and a pandemic. Pretty dumb that’s the comparison you make, tbh.

Everyone on TD is an economist and a physician.

There is a huge difference in those two things, agreed. But the philosophy of the perceived “weak” part of society not mattering as much as the “strong” is similar.

I agree. I could have phrased it better.

Influenza has a vaccine, Corona does not.

Just because they are not dying, doesn't mean they arent showing symptoms & requiring hospitalization, intubation.

Otherwise presumably healthy people are dying from Corona too.
