No it isn’t. If you live in NYC, you probably have a friend or coworker from the rural Midwest. Or Louisiana. Or Texas. Or South Carolina.
If you live in the rural Midwest, everyone is from there. TV does not accurately portray coastal life.
I also think it’s funny that you think Hillary lost because she doesn’t understand small towns. She’s married to a former president from a small town. She lost because she’s a terrible candidate, not because she misunderstands the rust belt.

You could literally walk from one end of the DC metro to the other end and always been within one of many super zips in the region (which a zip code where the average income is among the top 5%, the % of the adult population with advanced degrees is the top in the nation).
Washington DC is extremely isolated from middle America. There are only a few places more decoupled from the rust belt, deep south, or mid west than the beltway bubble.

TV rarely portrays anything accurately...but our media does almost exclusively represent the political interest and point of view of the coastal ruling class. It is much easier for someone living and working in Evansville to be exposed to the opinions and politics of a coastal elitist than the other way around.
And that coastal point of view is piped into every American home on almost every media outlet. They rarely make an effort to even understand middle America.
I'd also argue that both political parties are now run by coastal interests. The current POTUS being an rare exception that probably won't happen again for decades.

You think the average Joe wants to watch a movie about story city, Iowa or New York City?
Do you think more people care about watching news on Los Angeles or bawcomville?
It's about ratings and what sells. More people care about the big individual cities than the 5000 rural towns it would take to match their population.

The media doesn’t accurately portray anyone or anywhere. Hollywood is dirty and filled with homeless people. Most people don’t figure that out until they visit.

Yes it is, but you missed my point.
The DC area is for the most part people who grew up in middle America, understand it quite well thank you, and concluded the best thing to do was to leave.
I go to sleep each night hearing "Taps" played at Arlington Cemetery. When I was in BR I went to sleep listening to gunshots from Gardere. I've lived in the DC area since 2000 and have not had my car stolen once. Living next to LSU for four years my car was stolen three times.

In my experience, the coastal elitist that wrote the article is proving just how deep in the bubble he actually is at the moment. People like them usually have no avenue of exposure to life in places like the rural mid west. Many wouldn't care even if they did.
And I say that as a person from the deep south, currently lives in Pittsburgh, has an office in San Francisco, and travels all over North America on business.

Rural Americans will at least visit larger coastal cities and consume entertainment and news produced in larger coastal cities.

Do you not think this has something to do with where you live in the city? I'm sure at LSU you were a lowly college student living in a poorer part of town. Living in a prominent area on Highland is a bit different than near Gardere.
DC has one of the worst homicide rates and inner cities in the country. The fact that your car has never been stolen doesn't change that. My car was never stolen when I lived in Baton Rouge, should I deduce some illogical theory based on that anecdotal evidence?

Okay.. The midwest is boring as frick and lacks any type of culture. Is that a big surprise?
I am sure he knew a few gay people personally, they were just scared to come out.. People in those parts don't accept the gays all that well.

Hillary didn't even bother campaigning in the rust belt. She called Trump supporters (and therefore a majority of the rust belt) deplorables, and routinely insulted a large portion of the US.
I think I'd classify that as misunderstanding.
Bill being from Arkansas helped her zilch. She got a whopping 33% vote out of her hubby's home state. She understands rural America about as well as Queen Elizabeth.

She proudly stated that her policies would put coal miners and coal companies out of business. This was after she openly supported Obama's vastly more strict Boiler Mact restrictions in 2012.
Saying she doesn't understand small rust belt towns is an understatement. She, and a substantial portion of her own party are completely disconnected from that side of America. Many of them used to support candidates from her party.
