Knowing his salary, how much is taken from his paycheck, and the amount of his typical refund is something I couldn't even spout off about my own finances without double checking. It's objectively a lot of personal financial information to know about someone without having a particular need to know.
I think you misunderstood what I stated. Income and tax refund is all I know.

ETA: Don't people with kids get like 4k back per kid? That's basically what I'm saying, and it's absurd.

You could just say you're buying something and it pretty much covers that point.

No worries, I am not saying you can't or shouldn't know these things, it just struck me as a lot.

I take an extra $1300 a year out of my check to go toward federal income taxes

This was the part I may have confused with knowing how much is withheld from his check.

Child tax credit is 2k/child, and I think 1400 of that is refundable.

By this I meant that when I do my tax withholding, I have zero exemptions and I send the federal government $50 "extra" every check. Not that I pay $1300 more than him in federal income taxes every year.

This is absurd. Define “much” in taxes. Hell define taxes. We qualify for the full stimulus based on 2018 and paid over $20k in taxes.

Now that my children are grown and gone, and being divorced... I file Single and 0.
I also have $20/week withheld for Fed taxes. I DO NOT want to owe at years end.
Last couple of years income over $100K, I still received refund. It works for me.

You’re a project manager. You didn’t pay $45k in taxes.

His whole thing doesn't quite add up. He claims his wife who is under 30 and works in a hospital makes a little bit less than him, which would be deep into the 100s if not coming close to 200/year.

I don't know any under-30 year olds who work in direct patient care making 150k+

He said he's a degree'd plant baw. Let's assume he's an engineer and is roughly the same age as his wife. They make real good money, but it would be exceptional to make 150-200/year as a plant engineer with right around 10 years experience, if not a little less.

And he ain't clearing that in Ops with that experience level either.

He might also be counting his FICA as "income tax", which isn't technically correct

Even then it's still not completely adding up.

Assuming the standard deduction is taken, and neither of them put a cent into pre-tax retirement plans, you'd have to gross about 260k/year between the two of them to pay ~56k in Fed tax + FICA.

I guess that's possible, but yea a little misleading if he's including FICA.

He could be a manager or engineer of some kind working on the turnaround team. One good turnaround and they can make a 30K bonus. Sometimes they might have two a year.
The good plants pay very well and also give a 10 to 15% yearly bonus.

He could be lying his arse off in this thread, but I was just pointing out that there are possibilities.

What plant is that? I know some engineer baws at chevron, shell and valero that would put their two weeks in today if a 30k turnaround bonus was a possibility
