Yesterday I was picking up a to go order at a restaurant to bring to my girlfriend. I look at the menu online and placed an order over the phone before leaving my office. I usually don't even look at the receipts when I go out to eat or order to go but just out of curiosity I looked. 3.5% cost upcharge (I'm guessing for increased food costs) and then a 6.5% "to go" upcharge presumably to cover the cost of to go containers.

At the end of the day it was just one Caesar salad and it didn't amount to much money and honestly wasn't worth me personally caring about. But I could definitely see other customers getting pissed about these "surprise" charges on the bill. Particularly when someone is placing a large order for a group.

Those places should just raise the prices instead of sticking a bunch of charges on there.

Yeah dude hidden fees are bs. Just be up front about it. There is one place I’ll never go to again because of this.

A lot of restaurants/companies are using the inflation excuse to keep raising their prices or add more fees even though inflation/gas has gone down (should’ve never gone up in the first place). It’s absurd but people are still flocking in and paying these crazy prices so I don’t see it stopping.

Restaurants are struggling with pricing since cost of supplies and ingredients are so volatile

It’s not easy to constantly create new menus and pricing, and no one wants to see “market price” next to every item

Your total, pre-tip, tax included, was 18-20% higher than the original price when ordered?

Same with serving cost. Increase the food price and pay servers accordingly. Why leave out serving cost(the only cost left out ) and put that responsibility on the customers? It’s not our job to determine how much an employee gets paid. That’s your job. We just want to pay for the food and leave. What an inefficient system. If the other industries and rest of the world can do it, so can the restaurants.

I'll never forget during mid-COVID when lockdowns were easing up, we went to eat at a place in Austin with some friends. On the receipt, they charged us 10% extra for a COVID surcharge to make sure the customer paid for cleaning supplies. Absolute shite.

Also, if you've never compared prices, companies like DoorDash/Uber Eats/Waitr will have inflated prices on the food menus compared to what the restaurants originally post, on top of their delivery surcharge BS. Then drivers still expect a minimum 18% tip. Amazing that people will pay so much for convenience.

Yeah, there’s an honorable component to being transparent with customers about the costs behind the prices customers pay. But restaurant owners need to not overlook the behavioral economics of it.

If 2 different restaurants offer the same product at the same total price, the one that lists additional charges behind the total price will be the one that customers backlash against, believing their practices are absurd.

you're not much of an economist are you? Inflation has not "gone down" as you seem to believe. The rate of inflation has decreased from 8% to 6% but that still means prices are increasing (inflation) by 6% year over year. People need to understand the difference

True.

It isnt as simple as my first post in business, i do understand that.

But when youre throwing charges on for the takeout cardboard and paper...

Youre just hiding the cost from the consumer till its time to pay.

Yes I understand that. My point is a lot of restaurants/companies are still using the inflation excuse to up prices on consumers when that is not necessarily always the case. I understand inflation is still affecting people. But if I buy a pizza from somewhere one week and come back the following week and it’s $5 more you can’t sit there and tell me it’s bc of inflation (had this happen to someone I know recently)

I'd rather that than them being shady about it. The local place I ordered from last week just simply charged different amounts for app orders. $15 on the menu meal ends up as $21 when when you order it on the app.

You’re probably correct, packaging prices have gone to ludicrous levels over the last couple years. I do feel like they need to bake it into their overall price though and not line item it. Out of sight, out of mind. We’re baking our increases into overall price.

It’s really shitty what 2 weeks to stop the spread has done at all levels of commerce. As an owner, I hate that we have to pass on some of the increased costs to the customer, but in the long game, sometimes that is the only way once all other avenues have been exhausted.

It really wasn’t that imo. Perhaps in some areas where lockdowns were more strict. But this was caused by Biden attacking the fossil fuel industry and it caused the US to no longer be energy independent. In height of Covid and all these lockdowns (when trump was still in office), inflation never got over 1%, when Biden came and attacked the fossil fuel industry the inflation sky rocketed.
