Yes, I've been pondering a move to Charleston from Chicago.

I'd go to an area surrounding Boise. Denver is nice enough for now.

Work from home, chose to live in Lafayette due to family/friends and a great job offer for my wife.
If it wasn’t for family/friends we would be living elsewhere.

I'm sure there's plenty of smart guys in Silicon Valley that know how to spoof their public IP address with a VPN through a California server.
The only way to track this would be to force employees to clock in with GPS enabled time clock....but there are also ways to spoof GPS devices.

I’ve been looking at the Boone NC area just in case my job goes remote. As of now we’re supposed to be back in the office in January.

I'd move to a beach town.

Boone has about my ideal climate. I'm not sure my wife would agree to live somewhere that small though.

Would buy a camp and go spend my time there. Dularge or Bayou Gauche.

Nah, we moved here for reasons that didn't involve work.
I wouldn't hate working from home again, but my job would also be very tough to do remotely.

Absolutely. I'd move to a smallest, nicest town I could find that still had fiber optics for internet.
Be sure to get a genset.
IF you can get broadband (in a small town) whats the appeal of living in a large city.

I've had this discussion with several friends and coworkers over the summer. Most of us are done with Chicago, and want out of the state.

i took advantage of WFH while it lasted and temporarily stayed in a couple of different cities for a few months. if you have the opportunity to do your job effectively while remote, why wouldn't you do the same? life is short and the world is big.

how would you handle IT/computer issues if you needed to meet in person?

There are some tech companies threatening to reduce compensation in Silicon Valley if you move somewhere else because their pay is based on the cost of living in the surrounding Bay Area. If employees move to a place with lower CoL, they have to inform HR and "severe consequences will be had" if you're not honest about your location.
This is one concern. State income taxes could be another concern.

+1
Having a big-city salary can get you a nice chunk of property and a nice home in a small town.
