I'd imagine people would question why you work where you do unless you have a badass job. I have had that happen with me when people find out I went to Georgia. "Oh, why do you work here? It's a nice gig but it ain't a career. Leave and go find a career." Pisses me off when people don't know why I'm doing the shite I do.

It's much more complicated than that lol.

my brother and his girlfriend both have phds from harvard and i tell people about it a million times more often than they do.

most of the time, they say they went to grad school in boston. which is also what my mom always said. some people ask where and they wouldnt mind telling them, just didnt make it a point to say harvard.

I knew a guy who was honest. He said "in high school, I did well. But I knew in college ID frick up and barely graduate. So I went to Brown because I knew that when I fricked up and would be nearly kicked out, it'd look a whole lot better than doing the same at community college."

I enrolled in a grad program at Penn. Hardly anyone even knew it was an Ivy League school, they figured it was Penn State. The program was such a shitshow I withdrew while a full tuition refund was possible. I realized how stupid it was to pay 50 k when you could attend a state school program for free. It was through the Grad School of Education, which might as well be the University of Phoenix. Every single person in that program just wanted the Ivy League prestige.

It was a fluke he even got accepted to Yale, but he wanted to stay closer to home anyway so he could live the college life with his friends. He lived in a co-ed dorm his freshman year. Hot girls everywhere.

I like the guys who use their Yale alumni email address for everything. You know they have work email addresses and gmail or whatever, but they want you to see the Yale email address on every piece of correspondence.

The other Ivy's may do it too, I just see it with Yalies.

My wife is a descendant of a guy who started an Ivy League school. The family has a pretty good pedigree of education. Harvard, W&M, UVA, etc but you'd think with someone like that in the bloodline every one gets a free meal ticket.

Not so.

I feel like a retard sometimes with my LSU degree

For anyone that has kids that might want to go to Harvard, they just have to be smart, not rich.

LINK

•Admission to Harvard is need-blind, meaning your financial need will not impede your chances of admission.

•Aid is based entirely on need, not merit.

approximately 70 percent of our students receive some form of aid, and about 60 percent receive need–based scholarships and pay an average of $12,000 per year. Twenty percent of parents pay nothing. No loans required.

Our generous financial aid program—bolstered by the Harvard Financial Aid Initiative, which seeks to increase low- and middle-income students’ awareness of Harvard’s affordability—aims to make Harvard accessible to any student who is admitted.

•20% of our parents have total incomes less than $65,000 and are not expected to contribute.

•Families with incomes between $65,000 and $150,000 will contribute from 0-10% of their income, and those with incomes above $150,000 will be asked to pay proportionately more than 10%, based on their individual circumstances. Families at all income levels who have significant assets will continue to pay more than those in less fortunate circumstances.

•Home equity and retirement assets are not considered in our assessment of financial need.

I got a doctorate from an ivy. But IRL I just tell people I went to LSU for college.
In a lot of situations the PhD and the ivy league would hurt my credibility, so I don't mention it.

In some cases, though, it is a good card to pull out.

My SO is a Columbia grad and never mentions it. She thinks it's pretentious to talk about it.

To be honest the protest shite going on at most of them now is embarrassing. If I had gone there I would make sure to say it was before the kooks came over.

I know a young man from BR that got a Marshall, allowing him to get his Phd from Oxford.

He talks about what is happening in his life now, not then. I would consider it pretty good reason to brag but he does not see the need.

Most people aren't education snobs and realize that degrees really don't mean shite in most cases.

For example, I have a PhD, but I have never put PhD after my name. What's the point, especially if I don't put it to practice?

My father, on the other hand, barely graduated HS and retired at 59 (could have retired at 52) with 7 figures + in his bank account.

At this point in my life, I would be thrilled to retire at 70. I'd trade my PhD for my dad's situation today with no questions asked.

You can be an educated idiot as well. I met dozens of those when I worked in higher ed.
