Most I know make it known every opportunity they get.
One of the most clueless people I ever worked with got undergrad at Yale, Harvard law degree, and a Stanford MBA.

You can be an educated idiot as well. I met dozens of those when I worked in higher ed.
I think it gets worse every year. There are so many junk departments these days. And even in the respectable ones, academic standards are dropping.

I would get on my soapbox, but I'll spare everyone.
There is a reason this is happening....
But yes, there is nothing worse than a PhD in some useless degree that is a know it all. Saw it daily when I was in higher ed. You know, the types that would talk to you with their eyes closed when they thought they were making a point.
Never had to work a day outside of academia, but knew everything about banking, running a business, etc, simply because they had a friend who did said profession.

Everyone in my wife's family went to an ivy or seven sister's university.
They almost never say where they went if someone doesn't know it.
You will notice they might drop hints like the dorm or local stores so if you recognize it then you know they went to Harvard or brown or bryn mawr.
If you don't recognize those hints, there's no need to make a point of it.
There is a crepe shop "not in Boston, a little outside, where I went to college" that gets mentioned frequently. We were at a social event a while back and I was talking with some people who were very influential investors.
One of them said he liked a certain type of crepe and it has a very distinct name. I recognized it from stories from my wife, and chined in that she liked that crepe and another one.
It's like a light switched on and I had passed a test. There are a lot of codes out there that ivy's teach to ensure networking.

But then someone says, "Oh, BC or BU?" "Well, technically not in Boston, but nearby." "Cambridge." "Actually Harvard, not MIT." It's just as pretentious to say Boston as Cambridge.
Boston College isn't in Boston.

No. No it is not.

While not as prestigious as an Ivy League, I've been accepted into multiple Public Ivy programs for graduate school. Coming from a working class family and an undergrad from Auburn, I've noticed that I have been dangerously close to "new money" excitement when telling someone. Threads like this are good to read.

It seems like they either bring it up every chance they get like in that blackish episode or don't tell people at all. The later being much better people to hang around. A bunch of my cousins and uncles went to Yale as did their parents etc. They never bring it up or brag about it ever. They are all wicked smart btw, one of them u can hear on Diane Rehm show about once a month

I live in NYC so yeah I'd tell people.

in the south, anything that is tainted Yankee-yuppie is a bad thing.
dude wants to fit in. Vanderbilt is as yuppie as you can be and still fit in in the south.
the anti-intellectual bent of the south and republicans in general makes it a bad idea to let people know you could even get into an Ivy.
Worse, it might be HAAVAHD.

Never heard of it. Sounds like an over-priced, inferior piss ant school that shelters students from the real world.

you just explained why no one would want you to know that they were smart enough to get into Bryn Mawr.
You never heard of it, but you make up some qualities that it doesn't have. INFERIOR? You wish.
I have a very smart friend who went to Bryn Mawr. Her daughter is at Penn.
You are clueless and trying to make it into something you can brag on.

I'd damn near guarantee you it is harder to get into the University of Texas than Bryn Mawr. I'd also guarantee you that essentially every single academic program at the University of Texas is better than Bryn Mawr.

Bryn Mawr also has cooperative relationships with the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League research university 20 minutes by train from campus. Students may take up to 2 undergraduate courses per semester in Penn’s more than 75 liberal arts departments. Students can take courses in fields that are literally A to Z: from Actuarial Math to Zulu. Students also may take up to a total of 4 courses in Penn’s undergraduate pre-professional programs. Finally, joint degree programs give students the chance to begin working on a graduate degree at Penn (in Education, Engineer, or City and Regional Planning) while earning their undergraduate degree. Penn is easily reached through public transit, and subsidies are available for students taking classes there.

Damn, I'm glad I've been successful w/o having to do crap like this.
This thread is fascinating to me.

I have a good buddy that played basketball at Princeton.
He is more jock than nerd and absolutely hates it when he has to tell people he went to Princeton. He manages money in Houston now and he will say it helps to get jobs but his old Texas/Southern money clients don't want to hear about Princeton so he never brings it up.
Of course I love to bring up his alma mater all the time to make him uncomfortable. Like when he messes up the scorecard in golf and I say "I thought you went to Princeton?" really loud in the clubhouse.

Bryn Mawr College is a women's liberal arts college
He's right, you're wrong.
Bryn Mawr is Amherst-lite.

There isn't a major philanthropy board that doesn't have a Bryn mawr alum.
There isn't really an equivalent for it in the south, but the strength of that network is truly awesome to behold.
Need to get a CEO to donate millions to saving a frog in Ireland? One of those ladies will not only get the commitment but they will ask how much more they can help.
