Spent a week in Charleston with the family last May. Was already hotter than a Billy goat with a blow torch.
Also would rather deal with the Californians in California than the New Yorkers and Chicagoians in Charleston.
You hear more Yat-like accents than southern accents walking around.

So you know anything re Chapin, SC near Columbia?
SallysHuman is more the expert on that area of the state. Looks like a bit out in the country, near Lake Murray, and a not far drive from the Upstate.

Re: Chapin
Capital of Lake Murray. Historically a rural farm town that has turned into an outer suburb of Columbia with neighborhood after neighborhood being developed. Two of the best public high schools in the state, very good place to raise a family. Middle / Upper Class & safe.
Easy access to I-26 to get to Columbia & Irmo for work / nightlife / shopping although infrastructure needs to catch up to the population growth. If you are going to live in the middle of South Carolina and prefer suburban living over the city of Columbia itself, Chapin or Lexington are the places to be.

Thank you. It does seem to be booming with development so something to watch for in the next few years. Their friends mentioned the lake. I had researched it some bc they asked if I’d be interested in going with them. I’m retiring early so don’t see why not except my home here will be paid for and we have long discussed property with a detached mother suite so I can be available for my grands and also have help as I age. Good schools are a plus, their daughter will be in 3rd grade about the time they can pull it together to get it done. Thank you.

The lakes in the Upstate near the mountains are effing gorgeous. We rented a house on Lake Keowee a few years in a row and it's amazing. Mountain views in the distance, big, deep, clear lake, good fishing, and the houses in there are insane. Maybe a 2 hour drive from Chapin.

Yep Chapin draws a lot of retirees (and affluent families) due to the lake. Lakefront property has become exorbitant relative to what it was even 10 years ago so arriving middle class families are relegated to the cookie cutter neighborhoods which are becoming omnipresent. Chapin, along with everywhere else in the South, has lost a bit of it's charm and culture due to the growth but I guess that's the price you pay to live somewhere desirable these days.
Let me know if you have any questions about the area - I lived in Columbia for the first half of my life before graduating from USC and heading to Chapin to seek a slower life & start a family. Despite the creeping sprawl, life here is good!

San Diego is the winner.

Charleston was a great city 2013-2017 or so. But similar to Austin, TX it’s sort of ran its course as the "it" popular city. I think it’s still a solid city but the sweet spot was 10 or so years ago. Again, very similar to Austin and Nashville. Some cities are just too popular in this social media environment. It used to not be this way.

We don’t share many of the same big city issues that Austin and Nashville do on account of being a fraction the size. We’ve also been able to limit progressives in local government which is great but which will obviously continue to attract more people to the area who value a better, safer quality of life, lower taxes, and high trust community.

Charleston is no longer South Carolina.
I have many, many memories in that town, but don’t need to ever go back.

Chapin is lovely- I’d move there if we weren’t waiting for an opportunity to move upstate.
It’s expensive and is growing faster than infrastructure can keep pace- but overgrowth is happening all over the state. It’s made Lexington nearly unbearable.

Thank you for your comment. I’ll pass all along to the kids.

That looks just like NOLA weather. I like NOLA weather. The summer is tough due to the humidity, but the rest of the year is very nice. It’s June 15th and I was at my grandson’s T-Ball game this evening. It felt great out there. Definitely not normal for June 15th, but it was a nice break.

She's a pretty Sally... I oughta have kept my mouth shut and maybe everyone would have thought it was me.
