Thought same thing. Incredible that 1/5 of the world's population speaks this language. On the other hand, besides on the west coast this language is rarely taught in the US

Cajun French. When I was a kid growing up in the 50's and 60's, learning Cajun French was seriously frowned upon by the establishment, and in particular, educators.
My grandmother, aunts, mother, uncles all knew how to speak it and when I tried to pick it up, I was discouraged by them too.

It's interesting to me that despite the French being out of Indochina for quote awhile, the schools in Cambodia still use "ecole" in their titles. Pretty neat.
