Santa Barbara is my choice as well. Where you're resident neighborhood coyote has more intellect than the average Dallas resident.

Martha's Vineyard or somewhere else along the northeast coast. Beautiful country.

try again.

i.e., WTF is INDISPENSABLE in context with income?

quote:

indispensable (comparative more indispensable, superlative most indispensable)

(ecclesiastical, obsolete) Not admitting ecclesiastical dispensation; not subject to release or exemption; that cannot be allowed by bending the canonical rules. [16th-17th c.]
(of duties, rules etc.) Unbendable, that cannot be set aside or ignored. [from 17th c.]
The law was moral and indispensable. -Bp. Burnet
Absolutely necessary or requisite; that one cannot do without. [from 17th c.] [quotations ?]
An indispensable component of a heart-healthy diet.

Portland, OR .. but I can't really make that call until I go.
great summer

brutal winters

you have not tried the upper midwest or southern New England.

Portland rarely even gets more than a dusting of snow. a lot of cold rain and some ice storms.

I thought this as well. I suspect he meant "extra income" and didn't know better.

In the Sierra around the Tahoe area. California politics and taxes suck though.

So maybe near a ski town in Colorado.

I love it right where I'm at, south Orange County in trabuco canyon.

The View after a 25 minute walk from the trail that starts behind my home

With our current salary - probably the North Carolina or Tennessee area. I'd like somewhere with milder summers without brutal winters.

If income is not a factor - Kauai, Hawaii. Paradise.

I'm a scenic smaller town kind of guy. Gotta have water or mountains nearby.

Some of my favorites
Magnolia Springs, AL
Ocean Springs, MS
Camden, ME
Gruene, TX
Monterey, CA
Steamboat Springs, CO
Woodstock, VT
Bend, OR
Provo, UT
Chattanooga, TN
Taos, NM
Sausalito, CA
Eureka Springs, AR

I could live in any of these spots and be perfectly content

We're having a really cold winter for Portland. Possible snow for the second time this winter this weekend. We didn't get any snow at all the last two years.

The secret thing about Portland is that the weather is really pretty good. We get less rain than BR, although that's because it rarely rains hard here. The joke is that you never even need an umbrella here. The weather is not that cold and doesn't feel that cold in the winter, for the most part. 45 degrees in the deep south can be bone-chilling. In Portland, it's just hoodie weather.

The summers are gorgeous.

This is all assuming I'd be working from home, but

Existing income: Boise, Charlotte, Fayetteville, or Sarasota.
Little bit better income: Henderson NV, Reno, SLC or Sacramento.
Significantly better income: Temecula or Colorado Springs.
Money no object: San Diego or Santa Monica, CA.

if money were no object...I'd go between a place in the Warehouse District and something in Manhattan...oddly enough there are some places in Brooklyn that would.be an option for me as well, if I could get a job at Fort Hamilton in grade or higher with contract quarters on post.....it'd be Warp 6...

as long as my permanent residence would be in Louisiana, I'd look at the option of having a place in downtown Frederick, MD...
