If you are considering donating to Houston food relief

By all means make sure you are donating to a cause that will directly impact the area. A group that I am a part of is en route and will be set up tomorrow.

Operation BBQ relief sends professional cooking teams in to provide meals for those in need. OBR has the costs down to $1 per meal all in - that means a $10 donation sends all the resources in, gets the food, gets it cooked, pays the bills and feeds 10 people.
OBR deployed n Hammond and Baton Rouge during the flooding. They cooked 313,000 meals in 13 days.
Sure there are other needs, but feeding the ones in need, as well as those helping in the recovery is something that most don't think about. Please consider OBR if you are thinking about making a donation.

I imagine a hot cooked meal would be a godsend for those down there who have been going all day. Stopping to eat is something people neglect to do when they are stressed.

That's an awesome thing to be a part of. It's pretty amazing that ya'll are able to get the cost down to $1 a plate, everything included. Keep up the good work!

The crews are 100% volunteers and most of them have competition BBQ experience, so they can really crank out the quality food.
Most of the big money items are donated. Prairie Fresh donates all of the meat. There are companies that provide the plates, utensils and such. Believe it or not a big help is the OT's favorite coolers, Yeti - they send in tons of coolers to keep the meat chilled and they provide the ice and bottled water.

If you want your funds to actually go to people in need, don't donate to the The Red Cross.

Agreed. My dad, Air Force Vet, hates the Red Cross. One of my coworkers was going to donate to the Red Cross. She is now donating to OBR.

When I was a kid, our neighbor's house got completely destroyed by a tornado. We started helping them that afternoon and worked all through the night. TRC showed up 10 mins before the 10:00 news crew, passed out a couple McD's hamburgers, then jumped in front of the camera saying they had been there all afternoon helping. They left 10 mins after the news crew.
