re: If masks are *somewhat* effective then...?

How can wearing masks in public and taking them off when home be considered logical?
We now know that the virus is predominantly transmitted via saliva and other airborne particles. We also have learned it doesn't live long at all on surfaces. If you're around other people and everyone is wearing masks, you eliminate airborne transmission. Once you're away from people, either in your car or at home, there's little to no risk of airborne particles still floating around you and the virus which may have stuck to your mask or hands is almost assuredly dead.

Bit of a strawman there hero. Do a little more research next time.
Masks aren't going to save the world but are a minor inconvenience and do provide some benefit, even if limited. Wearing a mask won't kill you dude.

The shopper comes home to a place with no social distancing, probably less wiping (especially if kids are in the house) and where vulnerable people may be sheltering in place.
So you don't know the daily exposure level of your wife and kids? I'm really confused. I know what my family is doing, where they're going, etc. I don't know what Joe Blow on aisle 12 has been doing for the last week. How is this even a question?

Don’t use a trash bag as a mask.
@windshield this is the level of dumb I’m talking about.

It’s all bullshite. I work in a bank - you can’t wear a mask coming in to the bank because that’s what bank robbers do. If you are around anyone who has been to the bank - you’re exposed. Likewise, anywhere that person went after the bank - including everywhere they use cash or the debit card or ID they used at the bank.
Yesterday, I went to the gym. They wanted me to wear a mask while I wasn’t actively lifting. Think of the absolute absurdity of that for a moment.

The bigger issue is people wearing bandannas or homemade cotton/fabric masks, poorly fitting masks, wearing them incorrectly, wearing the same mask for months, creating nasty little virus spreaders, and thinking masks are a replacement for other practices such as social distancing (ahem, "peaceful protesters.")
Add all these up and you get a largely ineffective means of spread prevention. Think about if 85% of Houston's 60,000 person rally wore masks. That is 9,000 maskless people among a tightly enclosed crowd that probably includes another 15,000-20,000 that are engaging in at least one of the above issues.
Masks would probably have an impact if 100% of people wore them (never going to happen), and every single person had access to and used multiple masks per day, wore them correctly, and continued other preventive measures such as washing hands frequently and socially distancing at all times (definitely not happening.) Of course, proper hygiene and distancing would have the largest effect.

Not quite. You don't get dizzy from your own CO2. Science better next time hero.

Basic physics is difficult for some folks. Personally, I've just given up trying to explain anything to people who really just don't want to do anything outside their norm to begin with. You don't want to wear one, that's your right.

Exactly. This moron thinks he nailed it too.
It is a good thing breathing is involuntary or he would struggle with that too.

and not one of you virtue signalers can refute one point i made because there isn't one, the only benefit to slowing the spread is not to overrun our medical capabilities and that aint happening, masks do nothing in the grand scheme.

mask obviously limits the spray of saliva when talking, yawning, or just breathing.
People don't wash their masks or their hands and touch and readjust them constantly.
Further, breathing and sneezing constantly into an absorbant cloth mask, touching the mask, and then touching everything else has to be more harmful than just not wearing one and practicing social distancing.
Washing your hands and not touching your face is a million times better message than wear a mask and forget hygiene practices.
And before someone says why not both, Americans on the whole are stupid. So they listen to one message and if there is one message we should listen to it's carry hand sanitizer in your pocket and quit touching your face.

Dude your claim regarding breathing your own CO2 and getting dizzy from a mask is so comically misinformed and ridiculous that we just need to laugh at you. That is all.

Bro, calling you dumb for that CO2 theory isn’t virtue signaling.
Masks are effective on slowing the spread, but I fear it only delays the inevitable. My city has been wearing masks since the start but we’re still seeing a giant spike in cases the last few weeks. It’s the spike we didn’t see earlier because Texas shut down before it happened.

Our crack scientist that made this claim is doubling down. He thinks he nailed it with this one.
It is hilarious and frightening that people like him exist.

They’re very effective.
Posted on 6/30/20 at 9:21 am to DeCat ODahouse
Part of the reason for wearing a mask is to protect others in the event you are shedding virus. A somewhat effective mask will help with that somewhat, even if you don’t wear it at home. While wearing a mask is certainly not perfect, all the big tough guys saying they are useless are idiots.

you jumped on one line that was`t even important to the point. Do you have an answer to my original set of statements?
will the virus go away because you slow it? no
is there anyone that will avoid exposure as an eventuality? no
if i get it will i recover? overwhelmingly yes
what has the mask really done?
