I had one and detected on my property. I found a state tax token from the 1920’s, some wheat pennies, and three .58 caliber bullets.

Not sure but I've read where minerals, especially at beaches, can give a lot of false positives so you have to have a specific detector for what you want to look for and where you'll be looking. There are some that do everything well but they are $2500+

No, GPR detects anomalies. Not to mention you're looking at about 100k for a unit.

Bought my son one when he was in his early teens.
Only luck he ever had with it was when we went to the beach.

Not metal detecting, but some of my fondest memories as a child was going "digging" with my grandpa. He lived in what was Indian country along the Oregon trail. He had old encampment and outpost spots that he worked and would find 200 year old liquor and medicine bottles, arrow heads, petrified wood, etc. He has dug up at least 300 bottles.
He'll auction off a couple bottles per year that range anywhere from a few thousand dollars to $15k. Think he loans most of his bottles and arrow heads to galleries and museums

I have been into metal detecting for over 20 years, although not so much in the past 5 or so.
Louisiana is a great place for detecting. People have been living in some areas like BR and NO for a very long time. Downtown BR is a honeyhole and each time there’s a construction project or a parking lot gets torn up, you are likely the first person to detect there. A guy detected in the area around the marker for Zachary Taylor’s house when work was bing done and he found a watch fob with Taylor’s name on it. He had to work through a local historian to donate the fob in a state archeologist’s hands without being arrested. Drive downtown very early on a weekend morning and you’ll see guys working the construction sites over.
Everyone says that there’s nowhere new left to hunt but as technology improves, you can find stuff at the old spots. Detecting in the water is a good option since moving water uncovers or moves old items.
I’ve found lots of cool things but I think the “best” was a “Piece of Eight” made from a Spanish silver reale coin. You could still see the markings of the original coin. But, there’s more. This was back in the very early 1800’s and Louisiana didn’t have much official coinage. This reale was stamped by the Planter’s Bank and used as a sort of official currency. I donated that to a state archeologist. It was like this one but mine was in much better condition.
A good detector is not cheap but once you buy the detector, headphones, and a good digger, you don’t really have to spend much more.
