How? Their concern, according to her text, is hippa rules. Are they not concerned who may or may not hear my video appointments?
No HIPAA concern on this scenario. HIPAA limits what providers can release to other people and how they maintain and manage your health records. As the patient you have the right to share your confidential medical information with anyone you choose. Either the staff does not understand HIPAA or they are using it as a poor excuse for their policy.

I feel so bad for expectant parents right now. My sister is due with her first on May 7, and she's not even sure her husband will be allowed in for the delivery. She's terrified, obviously.
My parents had plans to fly out and see the baby two weeks after the due date. My sister currently lives in Japan and anyone coming from a foreign country has to be in isolation for 14 days upon arrival. Needless to say, my parents have had to cancel their trip.
Such a bummer.

I mean, I understand that they want to protect their patients and I appreciate that. I just think they can allow the healthy fathers inside too.
I’m very much on edge because my brother and his wife just had to deliver their deceased baby in October after major complications they found during their anatomy scan. Very sensitive to this thing right now.

Uh, welcome to being a father. See what happens if you get divorced.

This is exactly what I’m suspecting as well.

My wife went today and filmed the ultrasound for me since I couldn't be there. Not really that big a deal.

Have your wife tell the doctor this and that it would be great if the doctor could at least call you sometime today and briefly discuss your concerns

My dad was fishing out of Hopedale with my two brothers when my sister was born.
Had a note on the counter saying "At Hospital" when they got back. Left them outside with instructions to wash the boat and clean fish, he took a shower and then went to the hospital.

Facetime is not "HIPAA compliant". It doesn't meet the privacy requirements established for telemedicine. But, the gov has stated that HIPAA violations will not be prosecuted during this time as long as the measures taken are "in good faith"
ETA: But honestly its probably a policy just to prevent every red neck and hood rat from facetiming 37 people during every ultrasound they have

Probably something about patients recording medical procedures that can ultimately lead to lawsuits
Maybe...but pregnant women can get a DVD recording of the ultrasound. See if they'll do that for you. Not the same as being in the room but it'll be like watching the BCSCG on tape delay without knowing the outcome.

If true, this sounds more like an individual clinic policy than a women’s hospital policy
OR
A women’s hospital policy that is being incorrectly applied to a clinic
You should have her ask to speak to the physician before the scan to see if they will straighten this out.
Also, as stated, hipaa guidelines are being relaxed/not enforced to increase patient access.
But please remember, everyone is losing their minds over this, there are new challenges/questions daily, and health care providers really are doing the best we can.

Like with most things in life, the lawyers have made it more difficult and expensive.

Agree with Wiseguy - HIPPA is not the issue as the patient has the right to allow anyone they want to access records/procedures. It is an easy excuse for their policy as most people just buy it because "HIPPA."
As for the scan - just have your wife advise the tech/doctor y'all want to keep it secret until y'all can view it together. The techs are skilled at checking what they need without revealing the gender. They can either make the DVD as someone else suggested with the gender revealed there OR just print a pic and put in an envelope for y'all to open later when together.

BC video appts are a controlled line, not managed by you, thus not deemed a risk.
Unmanaged lines into a practice create business risk, I'm not saying its right, but the lawyers that are on retainer for the company are the ones who control that.

Cancel and get another doctor

Why can’t my wife FaceTime me from Woman’s Hospital’s physicians office during her appointment for our unborn child’s anatomy scan?
This is kinda fricked up. I understand 'why', but it's important that you be there whether it's in person or not. We had a bad marker pop up during that scan with one of our children. The doctor used the phrase 'chromosonal disorder' and my wife lost it. She doesn't remember anything else from that appt. Thankfully I was there to hear the doctor explain how little the chance we had of anything coming from that marker and calm my wife some. But it was another 72 hours until we could get another scan (Friday to Monday thing), and I would have been equally freaked if I had to rely on the information my wife retained from that appointment. Thankfully the scan was re-done and it turned out the young lady doing the scan originally screwed it up.

The doctor has nothing to do with this. The procedure is performed by a tech in a completely separate clinic in Woman's. A particular doctor has no control over this
