The real answer, that nobody will say aloud, is that the people who run softball leagues don’t believe fielders can field well enough to not get hit in the face. At least in little league softball, even outfielders wear masks.

If you want to really know what it is like, become an umpire. Softball pitchers throw from a distance of 45 feet. Baseball pitchers throw from a distance of 60 feet, 6 inches. Once you get back there, you realize softball is scarier and you have all the equipment to protect you. Softball pitchers have to react 25% faster than baseball pitchers. But if you really want to know what it is like, get out there and play pitcher in women's or men's fast pitch softball. You will come to know fear.

Maybe because they stand 10 ft from the batter?
It's a soft ball though...

I volunteer to hit a few of each into his face so he can decide which one hurts more.

Reaction time is equivalent really. A softball thrown at 60ish from 43 feet is about the same as a 90 MPH fastball in baseball.
My daughter plays, she's a shortstop, she wears a mask. I'm all for it, I think it's pretty dumb that younger baseball players do not wear them.

That's the distance from the pitching rubber to home plate. Hitters are getting better and better, pitchers are throwing harder, and there is minimal reaction time.
Also girls don’t catch as good. So it makes a lot of sense

They were those because they don't need cups.

A slow pitched softball is far more dangerous than a fast pitched baseball - why else would they make females wear these stupid looking things?
Why do you go be the catcher for one of these “slow” pitched softball pitchers and get back to us.

I bet you couldn’t hit that “slow pitch”

They’re closer to the batter. It’s really, really simple.
And it’s also not “slow pitch” or anything like it.

This is not true at all. It's idiot parents who have no idea what they're doing. My daughter is an elite player at the HS level and has never worn a mask in the field. I have not seen a player at the HS level wearing one outside of pitchers. And if you don't know why a pitcher would wear one, maybe you need to be wearing a helmet daily.

Women are smarter than men. Just are.
Men would play macho card and be ok with multiple maxillofacial surgeries.

We had someone wear one because she’d been hit in the face with the ball.
It’s relatively new for pitchers to wear them. Mostly it’s because the rubber is only 45 from home plate and they are even closer when they release the ball.
Not really any different than baseball players and all the equipment they wear at the plate or the jaw guard on some of the batting helmets.

Everyone in the infield has to.

Cause masking and social distancing help stop the spread
Probably started in 2020

so explain to me how a softball hits harder than a baseball
In baseball you have more time to react when a ball is coming at you. In softball you let go of the ball during the pitch and it comes back at you. I wouldn’t want to play third either. The ball jumps on them just as quick as the pitcher
