Idea for the Police

Why aren't all dashcams live streamed to headquarters? The radio operator could have a screen for each on-duty unit. If s(he)(still mean the same in '17?) sees that a unit is having a tough time or the particular situation might could use back up that she know is available and close, the operator could send a unit before the first officer calls it in.
Also, it would be an effective accountability tool.
What would be the pros and cons of this?

Major cost....
How often does your local department get sued for 6 or 7 figures?

Expensive and would require a lot of infrastructure, data storage, etc. Plus, if you're in an area where there is no cell service, it would be useless.
Current dashcams typically record, temporarily save, and then save video 2 minutes prior to the lights coming on.

How would live stream video stop these lawsuits anyway? Exactly, it wouldn't

Major cost....
As another mentioned, it could also be limited based on signal in more remote areas.

Sell it to A&E and pay for the lawsuits out of all that delicious TV money!

Uhhh cost, manpower, jobs, storage, transmitting capabilities, signal strength, just to name a few.

We built a platform that converges video, text and social media feeds into a single stream viewed and pushed out from an operations console. We are piloting the application now with a large city in Texas.
We've added body cams and drones to the mix.

Are you willing to foot the cost via a tax increase?
Me neither.

Saw what you did there.
Dispatchers have a hard enough time keeping up with officers when multiple calls are active. Officers except in very rare occassions call for back up at the 1st sign of real trouble and dispatch matrix recommends multiple units for different type of calls.
Your idea is good, but the manpower to watch and listen to cameras plus the cellular data usage to constantly stream video would bankrupt most departments.

Police don't want cameras.

Not to mention if the cell service was bad

It's not a matter or why or when. It's a matter of privacy. Yes officers are entitled to privacy. What if they want to take a piss? What if they're having a private conversation with family on the phone or in person? What if they're called to a home for a medical situation? Then you're into some HIPA issues. How about live streaming a rape investigation? Live Streaming will never happen. Too many liabilities.
It is already being used in many police departments.
LINK
Employees of a private business are not entitled to privacy in the situations you list while on the job, businesses recording all phone calls made on company phones is extremely common, why should the police be any different?
LINK
Emergency medical and fire departments are already streaming live video from the scene, so apparently HIppa is not a issue, the only thing that will prevent this from happening in most departments is the resistance to transparency by some police departments.

It only takes one large claim avoided for it to pay for itself.

The officers knowing they couldnt tamper with the dashcam would be a major deterrant to "poor" behavior.
