This guy is a really dumb criminal. Amazing how sloppy he was for a crime that was very premeditated.
Book smart does not equal street smart.
Huge difference

Dylan hadn't seen his face. The others had, maybe knew him previously, and could ID him.

A dog also started barking around the time he bolted. May also have been a reason he felt he needed to get out.

Again, he didn’t know who was home. He was in Pullman most of the night.
There’s more evidence that he was driving around looking for a random victim, then there is he knew these girls.
Some evidence used for arrest might be explained away easily or have some reasonable doubt cast, but with phone records at least the case against him really just started to be put together around Dec 23. The DNA was collected on 27th. The day of his arrest is also when they started serving search warrants at apartment, office at the college, other places, and got his car. I guess they will get computers, phones, and any other devices that he may have linked or sync’d together that even if erased may still provide more info. A huge part of investigation including his digital data has just started.
I think victims posted a lot of what they did and where they were onto social media. It would not take much to see posts and maybe even see the twitch live streaming of the food truck to know they were on way back to house just before 2am. Throw in anyone he followed that went to same places or were friends the house, and he could have multiple accounts and hashtags to piece together their night and over months their habits for weekends. Follow enough people and snapchat and other social media suggests you become friends which then leaves open did any share location to casual follows on any app. The entire culture of area has changed now, but concerns with locking all doors and about likelihood of becoming a victim of a crime much less getting murdered didn’t seem to the same there as in other places. One roommate had supposedly posted online about a window that could not be locked (it only got taken down after murders).
They might not have been the only ones he was obsessed with or stalking, but he did not randomly walk into that house at 4am without knowing who lived there. Something set him off around 2:42am to start leaving area of apartment and then decide to shut off phone off at 2:47am minutes before a camera in Pullman picked up the car heading towards the highway to Moscow.

Was his urge to kill simply that strong? Obviously he targeted them/ had been watching them, but maybe he didn’t plan out how to get away with it? He just decided I’m going for it tonight?
He HAD to have wondered at that point if he was being surveilled after being stopped twice on his was to PA. Burn your evidence in the fireplace maybe?? & why did he still have evidence 6 weeks later? What a moron

They had to know this dude was the guy based on all the evidence so why let him destroy more evidence by cleaning the car?
I guess they figured they had enough already. I don't really get why it took so long to arrest him. Like why get DNA from the parent's house and not his before he left?
Either way, doesn't matter. Dude's fricked.

Man, is it just me, or do all those blondes look alike? I get so confused with picturing who's who with the names because they look so similar to me.

You figure a person studying what he’s studying would have watched more forensic files. There’s a bunch of episodes about cops getting DNA out of a suspect’s trash can. But once they matched DNA from the crime scene to a relative’s DNA he was already fricked. They would have just gotten DNA from him later after his arrest. It might have just taken a few days longer while they got their ducks in a row for probable cause.

And did you see he court-appointed lawyer? I was like, “Are you fricking kidding me?”

I think that’s why he thought he was being smart by putting trash in different cans in his neighborhood.

I wonder if he knew Maddie and Jack broke up and that made him think he had a chance with Maddie, the face of Mad Greek. Maybe he was obsessed with her and she shot him down and he was livid.

Not necessarily. His car was seen at 500 Queen road. He definitely could have parked on the back side. Near that blue vehicle area.
I think this is the theory. It's possible that's where he parked in the past to watch the house and attempt to understand their routines. I believe there is a direct view of the house from that parking spot.

Yes. Platinum Blondes though are like another species to me.
I don’t know Many platinum blonds in Cajun country, so they all look the same

Should have burned it. I really like watching forensic files but it’s kind of a weird show in that it should be called “take notes and don’t make the same mistakes these guys made”
Posted on 1/6/23 at 10:30 am to The Boat
Apparently he didn’t watch it
Posted on 1/6/23 at 10:31 am to The Boat
Agreed.
Though I can’t imagine he’d be able to burn everything containing his dna as long as he was being heavily watched. Anything he did was gonna cause attention.
As has been stated in this thread, it appears he was very booksmart, but lacking in practical real life crime

It’s probably a moot point because he was done the second he left dna at the crime scene. But people burning fires in the winter in Pennsylvania isn’t really a suspicious activity.

Very fair point and one I didn’t consider.
Yeah the Sheath got him regardless, but he sure did make it easy for them to collect dna from the trash.

I was thinking about the question about the lack of bloody footprints a few pages back and I think I have a possible explanation. At least 2 of the victims and possibly all 4 were stabbed in their bed. You have to assume that they were more than likely under blankets which would have soaked up a lot of the blood, but also blood would have to soak through the mattresses (which takes time) before pooling on the floor. If he is in and out of the rooms before any significant amount of blood is on the floor, then there is a good chance he doesn't track a significant amount of blood or any at all through the house. Blankets and bed linens could have also limited the amount of blood spatter on his clothes as well ensuring he wasn't a dripping bloody mess as he made his way out of the house and to his car.

I haven't looked into him enough yet, but why do we assume he was smart? Because he was in a PhD program?
