According to this "Timeshare Cancellation" commercial I always hear on SiriusXM, it appears to be a bad idea.

What can you get for 150k points, avd his dues that compare to a $1K per year?

If it’s a week in peak time at a nice resort, might be worth it.

Review the history of fee increases and how old the property is (ie are there likely to be large renovation charges in near future - your neighbor might be aware of a big one in a couple of years that they are not telling you about)

My parents did the Wyndham points thing for a while. They were retired and liked to travel. It worked out for us because we got a free place to stay in Destin and Disneyworld when the kids were younger.

My sister has a condo she bought on treasure island. When she's not using it, a management group rents it out and she makes money on it. Best way to go. Stay far away from time shares. You will eventually get tired of it and it's hard to get rid of without getting lawyers involved. That's why your neighbors are trying to dump it off in you. Doesn't sound like you have very good neighbors.

Yep he should’ve signed the papers on Friday. You can’t get a better deal than free!

Timeshare = sharing time. Where else can you share time with others? It’s even in the name. I wish I had a cool neighbor that would bring me a great deal they didn’t want anymore.

If she’s hot, you could offer to go on an all expense paid trip with her to test out the waters, if you know what I mean.

Agreed.., it's hard to trust some guy who talks about legal issues like he's from the hill country.

Here is your response to your neighbor: "We just can't commit to that sort of responsibility, thanks so much for thinking of us"

Apparently, not only are timeshares a scam, the timeshare cancelation industry is a scam too.

OP don't even consider it after reading this thread. You'd be a fool.

Right after I got married we sat through one of these to get a free thing. We weren’t even going to sign up because we knew it was a scam. Even toured the rooms of some cheap hotel on the Biloxi coast. Seeing it slipping away and playing to emotions, eventually the rep asked is why we are not investing in our not-yet-kids future We walked out and never went back to another one of these again. Turns out we had to commit financially to get the free thing so it was a waste of time.

Ever wonder why there are so many businesses out there that are wanting to help time-share owners get out of that contract????

There's a reason for them being in business, and it's not a good one for the time-share owners......

Timeshares are on the same level of stupid as reverse mortgages and index based annuities. There is a reason why they prey on the lower middle class who have typically never had money and don’t know how to manage it.

And that’s the catch to every timeshare. The contract is for perpetuity. Regardless how much annual fees increase she’s stuck with it unless someone agrees to buy it from her…after she dies it attaches to her estate and then her heirs get stuck with it.

She’s agreeing to pay “your” legal fees because she wants to be certain all her liabilities are severed.

150k points isn't much but you can vacation in place for a week maybe. Those 150k points cost her over $20k, plus the $1k annual fees.

Everytime you check in at their resort they will pressure you into buying more points by offering you an$100 gift card or some BS. Tell them no everytime.

We got suckered into a Wyndham timeshare years ago because our friends had one.

The only upside for us was that it forced us to take vacation every year with our young kids so we didn't lose the points.

If you look at the maintenance fees as renting a hotel room for a week then it's not bad. Probably can't get a nice hotel like that for $1k a week.

The plus is that their rooms are very nice and have a full kitchen.

People pay thousands of dollars to GET RID of timeshares.

There are companies that will take them off your hands for thousands of dollars. Hell, most timeshares are passed to your children when one dies so even they can’t get rid of them.

Giving you a timeshare burden without any money is taking advantage of you. She is NOT doing you a favor. It’s like saying
The Saints can have Kirt Cousins for free all they have to do is pay his salary for the remainder of his contract. Except a timeshare never ends and your children will be faced with paying to unload it.
