I was charged a service call fee for a phone call.

I bought some security cameras and a DVR but ended up being too much for me to handle so I asked around if anyone would be able to install it. One company said they'd do it. Tech came out and did what he needed to do and was paid the amount agreed upon.
A week later, I have no recordings at all. DVR doesn't even recognize the HDD. I called the owner of said company to see if he knew what it would be. He just suggested buying a new DVR. Phone call lasted 3 minutes, 27 seconds. I figured out the HDD went out so I swapped it. All is good.
I received a bill for $75 in the mail. In the description it says "Service Fee-Troubleshoot over phone". Should I really be paying this?

Send him the bill for the new DVR in response.

Not if they installed it and it didn't work from the beginning. Was it working when the install guy left?

I would look over the paperwork you got when they agreed to install it and after you paid the agreed upon sum from the outset. I'm sure there's probably verbiage in there about this kind of thing.

Yeah that's a clear "suck my dick" situation if ever there was one.

Send him back a penny and an invoice for "Invoice Processing Fee - $74.99" stamped PAID.

so you are wanting to benefit from his expertise without compensation?

It was working when he left. When I spoke to the owner, he said since I bought the equipment, they wouldn't be responsible if something breaks in the future. I can understand if he drove to my house and tinkered with it, I'd pay.

Send him a picture of $75.
Or just a purple dildo.

Yes I did. Did you. OP provided his own shitty equipment and paid for an install. His shitty equipment was failing and called the Installing company owner for further advice to which was on point. OP Doesn't want to compensate said company for their expertise advice.

Did you? Op supplied the equipment and the provider supplied the install.
Provider also helped diagnose an equipment issue over the phone.

I give little shite away all the time for free in hopes it gets me repeat business. OP's install company obviously doesn't want repeat business.

So you bought something from someone else, couldn’t figure it out and phoned a friend for help. He came and installed your own system, charged for his time and left you with a working system. Then a week later your new system crapped the bed and you ask the guy for additional help but don’t want to pay him this time because???

Literally, no one else wanted to install my equipment. Obviously they would want me to use their equipment but he could have said NO just like everyone else. I didn't twist his arm.

Kinda ridiculous if the call was really 3 minutes. But troubleshooting someone else's equipment will get you taken advantage of, too.
