It would take some serious commitment & effort to get stuck in the only quicksand I've ever experienced.

Never seen a hobo in real life. What even did they carry in that bandana tied onto a stick??

And I mean, it is 2025 and we still don't have x-ray glasses that actually work. WTF man. Highly, highly disappointing.

I got into some quicksand when walking the Buffalo River in Mississippi. In .2 seconds I was down to my hips.
If I didn't have a friend there to pull me out it would have gotten interesting.

Hobo: A hobo was a migratory worker who traveled in search of temporary or seasonal employment, often by illegally hopping freight trains. Work was a core part of their identity, and they considered themselves dignified laborers, adhering to a code of ethics that often forbade begging. They would take jobs in agriculture, construction, or on the railroads, moving with the peak seasons.

Tramp: A tramp was a person who wandered and traveled, but avoided work whenever possible. While they were mobile like hobos, their lifestyle was less about finding labor and more about the act of wandering itself. They might take occasional odd jobs if absolutely necessary, but preferred living off charity or other means.

Bum: A bum neither traveled nor worked. Bums were typically stationary, urban dwellers who stayed in one place (e.g., a city park or slum) and relied on begging, handouts, or scavenging to survive. They were generally viewed by hobos and the wider society as the most degraded, representing a complete loss of initiative and independence.

I think we have plenty of hobos, they are all just Mexican now.

I really expected to have to stop, drop, and roll a lot more by this point in my life as well.

Quicksand and killer bees would have been what I thought would be more of a problem as a young child. Not sure what age you are to have worried about hobos.

CSB alert; Whitesnake’s song Here I Go Again was going to have the lyrics, “And here I go again on my own. Going down the only road I've ever known. Like a hobo I was born to walk alone.”

David Coverdale said he wanted to use drifter, but had already used it a few times in other songs so he used hobo. Before the release though it was changed to drifter so people wouldn’t mishear it as homo.

Anyway, here’s Tawny Kitaen.

Sure you have.

They don’t carry bandana stick bags anymore. They have all their stuff in stolen shopping carts and milk crates.

EDIT: I’m an idiot, was thinking of homeless people. The hobos hang out at Home Depot in 2025.

All the major cartoons of the mid-century depicted hoboes with, yes, BINDLES. I remember asking people for years what the stick with the bandana was called. Nobody ever knew. I think I finally heard Nelson on the Simpsons refer to it as "bindle" - and was both excited and perplexed. What a weird word. I think it's just a bastardization of "bundle".

I laughed at this when I saw the meme saying the same exact thing 6 years ago on Facebook.
