I'm pretty certain you have a cat now. Go ahead and make the minor investment in shots and have her checked to see if she's been spayed. If so, good, if not, it's worth the minimal amount of $$$ to have it done.

We're dog people at our house, but there's nothing wrong with having an awesome cat. Our problem is that we have a blue tick coonhound. They are notoriously anti-cat and judging by how she acts when she sees one, I'm pretty certain a cat would not survive around our home. It's unfortunate since cats are pretty awesome critters.

By the way - that dead mouse was the cat's acknowledgement of your generosity and its acceptance of your home as its primary residence now.

Thanks.

We've joked that Willow is going to live till she's 20. Aside from some arthritis in her hip and she misses her box every now and again, she's in decent health.

Charlie is a little bastard.

Congratulations on the new cat. An outdoor community style cat is the best kind of cat to have.

Cats and foxes do this. It's so weird to be gifted something by an animal. I have a gray fox that waits for me to get off work and leaves dead rabbits by my chair.

Fox knows what she is doing. I can be sick as hell laying in the bathroom floor and I'll tell my wife to make sure pretty girl gets a plate lol

Listen I love dogs don’t get me wrong, but if you have a cat like this there is really no better pet. They mind their own business most of the time and are pretty low maintenance but will still come around and let you pet them or play with them when they want to so it’s a win-win. Also, they kill mice, rats, and roaches.

Yup.. cats are definitely off creatures.

We had a cat that adopted us growing up and he'd always leave us treats.. Snakes, field mice, lizards and one opossum oddly enough

We had a cat show up about 16 years ago and we fed it for a few days then took it to the vet to see if it had a chip. It did and we called the owner who took her sweet time to come pick him up.
When she showed up the cat ran and hid under our couch. She took him home and two days later when it was storming outside the cat showed back up again sopping wet. The lady lived across a four lane road that is busy as hell. Luckily the cat survived two trips across the road.
Needless to say we kept the cat and we lived happily ever after until he passed away about three months ago.

You've been chosen, cat distribution system in full effect. Take him to the vet, get him checked out and updated on vaccinations, tested for FIV/FLV. Then take him home and make him a permanent indoor cat. A litter box, some food bowls, some toys, and your kids get to learn some responsibility to taking care of him.

Find out if it's chipped now before you get any more attached. If you think you have a new cat and wait for a medical issue to take it in, then find out it's chipped, they can seize it after calling the true owner and they want it back.

Happened to me once years ago. This Russian Blue, beautiful Russian Blue started hanging around. Knew a good gig when she had one. Never went out into the street. Came inside, when she wanted to go out, went to door. Good cat. Named her Whiskey. Me and my downstairs neighbor shared custody until he moved a couple of years later and took her. She lived out her life with him.

Never saw any signs or anything on social media. She was definitely someone's outdoor cat. Wasn't starving either when she appeared.

Keep this thing around.

Outside cats are great at pest control and this one is trying to show his worth already.

You can bring the cat to a vet and have them check for an implanted chip to see if someone owns it and it wandered off. The chip has all the original owner's information in order for them to find lost pets easier.

Or, you can just keep it for however long it hangs around.

I got one of them, she Russian Blue I think they’re called? Keeps the mice and vole population down, and is a real sweetie-pie.

I call her silver due to her color, but our kids named her “Peaches” go figure.
