I’ve seen this many times on eBay, FB marketplace, and other places. I don’t understand why. It costs pretty much the same, there’s no forms to fill out (like a customs form for international).
Hell, it costs the same to mail to Puerto Rico as it does anywhere in the US.
Are people that stupid thinking shipping to Hawaii or Alaska is any different than shipping it to the next town over from you?

It is different for every company except for the USPS. The Postal Service treats shipping to Hawaii and Alaska the same as other state but other companies like FedEx and UPS do charge more.

This is correct. USPS is also a complete shitshow right now.

"1) Does it cost more to ship to Alaska/Hawaii/Puerto Rico?

The answer is a qualified "no". IF you are using USPS and IF you don't live in certain central parts of the US, the cost is no different than shipping to the opposite side of the country. If you live in Pennsylvania it is zone 8 to California and also zone 8 to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico (and Guam, US Virgin Islands, and other US territories.) The Priority mail cost is the same.

If you are using UPS or FedEx the cost may be substantially higher to ship outside the contiguous US. Those carriers do now offer ground service to Alaska and Hawaii, but it does cost more. USPS is recommended as an alternative for those locations as the rate is much more reasonable. "

eBay

Tl;dr

MAILING is the usually the same.

SHIPPING MAY be more expensive depending on the shipping service used.

We ship reptiles and can only ship to lower 48 because they have to be shipped overnight.

Its because it typically costs more once something goes up in the air.

No. Because it is. It can be significantly more expensive to ship something to/from Hawaii and Alaska.

I’m talking something small. I ship with USPS all the time and never had a problem. FedEx is the worst of all them, in my experiences. They’ve broken more of my shite than anyone.
The auction I saw “Lower 48 states only” was for a wrench. Nothing big or bulky.

Yep, I sent some stuff to Alaska and UPS wanted like $80 to ship ground...pro tip use USPS flat rate boxes. The same shipment was $15 and got there in 3 days.
