I was in the skanky Chimes Street punk crowd in the early 90's. Awesome shite. Most of the kids were rich and slumming it. Drugs all around. The Library porch was the place to be if you were taking a break from the Bayou. Even on a Wednesday night it was cool as shite.

Landlines and payphones. To make a long distance call you had to have a card, I think it was called MCI card with a number about 100 numerals long that you had to punch in. Or if you just wanted to let someone know you'd gotten home safely, you'd make a long distance call and hang up after it rang once. It was sort of like code. :-)

And in both the dorms and apartments around campus we would leave the door propped open so anyone passing by could stop in. Instant party.

Yeah that was a bad call from that dude. Everyone was IM'ing back then. I remember in 99-02 that was part of the game. What's your aim address.

In high school we had pagers and would have to go to pay phones and pray there wasn't a needle with the AIDS sitting in the coin return slot waiting to prick your finger. We had to carry around little books that had everyone's phone numbers in them. We had bag phones and then nokia phones by senior year. Had gateway computers and if someone called your house, you would be knocked off the internet, which was mostly just AOL chatrooms and games. Pretty much everyone had nokia phones by college and also napster was huge back then.

You nailed everything but the long games of Snake while you waited for your buddies to call back.

No, but people didn't have the expectation that everyone is available all the time. You actually had to make plans.

I would say the strangest time to be in college would have been '98-'02. Cell phones weren't popular where everyone had one, no texting and pagers were obsolete.

I'm pretty sure most people had cell phones in 2001. Everyone I knew had the Nokia bar phone.

People were more reliable. You used to say be here at this time and they would. With phones things come up. Before youd be going to meet a fruend, you wouldnt have other people contacting you to change your mind because there werent cell phones and text messaging. Man think about work now. shite happens at work and I get a call. No excuses anymore saying you weren't by a phone.

I didn't have a cell until 1998 and didn't send a text until late-2003 or so.

I miss the times before that. Trying to move back in that direction.

I don't remember any issues meeting up, and the intrigue and uncertainty of the logistics were part of the fun.

I wish I was younger. There was nothing magical about not having a cell phone, and there's no reason why cell phones should add stress.

I still remember those sounds. People get online, door opens... Leave, door shuts.

Then the infamous "dudahla" sound.

I went to SLU for 2 years before transferring to LSU back in the late 90's. One day, my girlfriend paged me "911" like 3 times, which was international paging code for "call me immediately, it's an emergency". I had to put $4 in quarters in a payphone to call BR to hear about how her cat had died.

I graduated in 06 and didn't get a cell phone until sophomore year. Also, never took my phone to class, I turned it on in the evening to talk to my girlfriend who was at another college.

I actually miss those days before we were all obsessed with that stuff. I didn't care who had the newer phone that was nicer, a phone that could store numbers was good enough.
