Before Google we had encyclopedias
As a kid I remember getting one of these books and reading and looking up all kinds of obscure info

This is true. You had a code that you could call and check your messages at home. I remember using payphones to call my home phone and check for any messages.

Did that a LOT when I got to college and I'd get off work at the pizza parlor and call my home phone to check message.
That was very useful to have your friends holler there if changes were made to a night out.

One rule of thumb to live by was that if you the place you were at was hopping and you were having a good time it was a bad move to go to another bar to find other people or to see if there was something better happening somewhere else. Inevitably if you tried to upgrade the party you would end up in a place that was lame and the night was ruined

So true. Like you said you could not just call a buddy to let him know that some place was rocking. It was more of an adventure.

Pagers were actually widespread? I know my dad had one for business but I didn't know college kids used them

Yes. Just before cell phones were as common, everyone had pagers. I had one in jr high.

Spring Break '85 most of my fraternity went to the Ft. Lauderdale area. People stayed at assorted hotels and with friends from the area. Somehow, without the aid of cell phones and pagers, we usually were able to assemble the group in the same place. Spread the word... we're meeting at the beach tomorrow. At the beach... spread the word, we're going to xyz bar tonight. It usually worked. It sure made you pay attention and look out for your friends.

When I was in college, there was a site before myspace/facebook/whatever else is hot these days called collegeclub. And pay phones were real popular before cel phones really took off.

Those times were great. You made plans in person or by land line. Stuck to the plans.

I truly feel sorry for those today who go out on a date and their date is constantly looking down at their phone.

Pagers weren't big in our circle. The only one who did have a pager dabbled into drugs so it was considered a 'shady' thing in our circle.

I'm late to the party but IIRC, we actually picked up the phone and word would spread from there. It was fantastic. If you didn't want someone around, guess what...that person didn't have to know where everyone was going.

Hitchhiking...what ever happened to it. I would even hitchhike with my girl from one college town to another and not feel too worried. The last time I saw someone hitchhiking the cops had him down on the ground.

I was speaking of the segment of today's youth that check in on this social media site or that social media site.

I can't stand mfers checking me in places without my knowledge. Maybe I don't want folks to know that I'm at a bar on a Sunday afternoon.
