I just read a book by an LSU professor about the history of social class in America.

It's pretty interesting. She has focused on a very under-chronicled aspect of American history: poor whites. You can find a million books about the history of black people in America, but very few scholarly works focusing on white trash.
She spends a lot of time on the early 20th century and the eugenics movement. Even Teddy Roosevelt publicly advocated for having white people with superior genes outbreed the riff raff, whose tainted blood he believed was destroying the race. Fascinating stuff (see George Will's latest column for a similar discussion).
Then she moves into the rise of mobile homes and provides a complete history of what we call "trailer trash." You folks in the LP will enjoy learning about your culture. You should read it.

It actually is a very good book by a legitimately brilliant LSU historian.
Too many people can’t get past the title. But it’s a fascinating read.

Took her for a "U.S. Founding Myths" course my sophomore year at LSU. We were assigned her book about Aaron Burr: "A Fallen Founder." She is super sharp and an incredible writer, but will still go down in my memory as my hardest grader

What genes didn't do, welfare did.
The lower tiers of society are hopelessly dependent.

I mean, I agree with you, but from their point of view they aren't hopeless. They are mostly just lazy freeloaders that could get off welfare if they busted their arse to do so. The ones I've interacted with intentionally stay below income thresholds to maintain their welfare status.
We just know its hopeless because we know they'll never change. If that makes sense...

I call them the "shades of gray" for every black and white argument.
Flies rebel flag, screams white supremacy, hates blacks....but has a criminal record, plays with drugs/has mild addiction, has bastard children, broke or on some sort of government assistance, parks on lawn, and the best part listens primarily to black music.
Wish we would just have a class movement. i.e.Segregate schools based on a kid's parents' marital status. Single vs married parent schools as it is shown that kids from broken homes are at much greater risk of being problematic, so it's best to put them in a school best suited for their "needs".

My cousin was denied welfare because they say he failed his color test but he doesn’t remember taking any tests
Luckily he was able to get disability for his fibromyalgia
