I Just Cancelled the Family Summer Vacation

Had planned to take the kiddos to Washington DC for a week-long educational trip right after school let out this summer. They're at the best ages (middle/high school) for a trip like this where history comes alive. I was really looking forward to going myself as well since I haven't been to DC in 30+ years. White House, Arlington, you name it. Had been getting more pumped about it as I booked airfare, accommodations over the past few months. And now this.
I had been on the fence on whether it was still a possibility to go for the past two weeks (still over 2 months away! maybe we'll beat this thing!). But now that Virginia announced a stay at home order through June 10th - and DC is not far behind - I pulled the trigger tonight and cancelled the trip reservations.
I acknowledge it's peanuts in the grand scheme of things. Other people and OT posters are going through much worse than me. And obviously I can rebook it for sometime later (knowing my luck, they'll lift the stay at home order just in time for fall classes). I'm extremely grateful that my family is all healthy especially in light of the sad stories that are coming out. I can at least find solace that this decision will help protect my kids from unnecessary exposure.
It just sucks that my list of plans-gone-awry just keeps growing and growing over this damn corona.

The Virginia order says that it could change and open up earlier if deemed. They are planning worse case scenario

Get ready for downvotes.
I'm not trying to make it sound like I have it bad or anything. I just figure there are some OT dads out there in a similar spot I am in who have stories to share.

You should take them to Baltimore and let them experience some real culture. That'd be a trip they'd never forget.

Went on a lot of family vacations as a kid to a lot of different places...but our week long trip to DC to see the monuments, memorials, Smithsonian, etc was by far my favorite. We spent 3 days at different museums at the Smithsonian and could have spent 2 weeks. National Air and Space museum is incredible. Definitely reschedule.

Ha! I got turned around once on a business trip in Newark, NJ a few years back. Drove the rental car straight into a real bad, carjack you in broad daylight, part of town. My coworkers were flipping out, locking their doors, etc. That stop light stayed red forever!
Memories!

Go to orange beach instead. Your kids will enjoy it more.

Sad for you and we just cancelled ours as well.
Wrong board for this though - you’ll see, this is a passionate and well intentioned (as they know) but extremely thin-skinned group.

LSUFreek is a LEGEND. No disrespect to him. Love his stuff.
But I've been on this board longer than you, pal. So shut it.

Doesn’t affect me as my kids are beyond it, but what are away summer camps doing? Have they been cancelled yet ?

I was late booking our summer vacation this year and have been waiting for others to cancel so I can book what I want in Turks & Caicos

Why not reschedule? I rescheduled Montana for late August and Colorado for September.
