If my house floods, all of Baton Rouge would be several feet under water.
I don't need flood insurance, even though it's cheap.

Why would a six figure loss be irrelevant just because everything else went to hell too?

The whole FEMA and WYO flood insurance program is a damn disgrace.....over $24B in deficit. But hey......we know the government is not wasteful with spending

You think it's bad there? Should have seen the Carolina flooding last October. Nobody had flood insurance.

I just increased my deductible last month to lower my premium. It was getting out of control. I am in a flood zone but my entire neighborhood is a couple feet about base flood so the premium wasn't terrible but when it increases 15% each year it adds up. Wish I would have just kept it as is. Oh well too late now.

I live in AZ...a desert....and even I would buy flood insurance.

This monsoon season we've had flash floods all over the area. Lots of rain dropped in a short amount of time. I keep seeing coverage of flooded homes on the news here....and people saying they didn't think they needed flood insurance in AZ.

I think I may get it after this. And not even bc I'm nervous about today's events. This seems to be as bad as its ever been and I don't have any standing water in my yard at all. Streets are totally dry. I'm high and dry (Webb Park are of BR). My line of thinking was if I ever do flood then BR as a whole is all underwater. But it's too cheap to pass up. And just bc everyone else is underwater doesn't mean I want to be in that number on the uninsured side. As bad as it was today, whose to say it can't happen again and maybe even be a little worse. People prob said same thing in 83 and here we are again right. Yeah I'm def getting it. Just talked myself into it as I type this.

As a property adjuster, I have denied many flood claims. Even in Yuma Az where it rains like 3" tops per year.

These are usually big claims, even with surface water damage.

People are dumbasses.

Lets see, live in flood plain...A-1. Even though the house has never flooded in the 50 years its been here.

Had to purchase flood insurance when I bought the house. Paid over $1,000 a year for 30 years. That did not even include contents. Divorced 15 years ago, FEMA said they could not remove my ex wifes name from the policy unless I unless I bought a new policy @ $1,800.

To hell with that. Still high and dry for now.

Having worked in a department that had to determine whether or not people lived in a flood zone or not, I can tell you this will not happen. When I had to call people and tell them they were in a certain level that required insurance they would bitch and complain and tell me shite like I was the one who just decided at random who was in a flood zone.

When someone would come in for their construction permit and they were asked if they were in a flood zone, the common answer was "no, it never flooded there so its not a flood zone". We would explain to them it doesn't work like that and that the bank will require them to have insurance, etc. People tried to do whatever they could to try to get over on the bank (which never worked), but people will do whatever they can not to have to pay flood insurance.. This will not change many people.

Not trying to keep you awake at night with worry, but you're probably only 31' above the spillway level now due to subsidence.

Flood insurance varies depending on what you are rated at. Flood zone X is dirt cheap for me.

Covers $250k for the house and $100k for stuff inside. Any additonal coverage needs to be purchased through a private insurer.

Some areas literally cannot flood unless the Mississippi River levee breaks. And if the levee breaks not having flood insurance will be low on your list of concerns.

Not really...a home can flood due to backed up draining and a pond overflowing. It doesn't have to be a massive widespread event. A home flood can be very isolated in certain circumstances

Well, I can see what you're saying, but what he is saying is also correct. There is absolutely, positively, zero chance whatsoever, that my home would flood unless the levee breaks.
