This weekend and this past March should be a major wake up call to everyone who lives in an area that "hasn't ever flooded before". If you aren't in a flood zone, the insurance is not that expensive at all so there is really no excuse.

I hate seeing all these homes flood, but hearing about someone flooding with no insurance makes me not feel for them as much. Maybe I'm cold hearted

I bought my flood insurance before Katrina. It is cheap ( not in a flood zone).
I just got the renewal in the mail the other day

I think it's more responsible homeowners that pay to have insurance get pissed when people who roll the dice get bailed out.

shite, let FEMA bail them out, join the crowd. People will spend 400 + a month for cable and cell phones but won't purchase flood insurance living in South LA

Sometimes the insurance company won't cover a home. Especially if in flood plain.

U stay in that home at ur risk.

Some areas literally cannot flood unless the Mississippi River levee breaks. And if the levee breaks not having flood insurance will be low on your list of concerns.

The person that we helped after the March flood, this person's home flooded in '83, but it had been so long ago, that this person dropped their insurance.

Insurance would've covered every bit of the damage.

No, b/c you'll get bailed out. It is not unheard of for a levee to break.

You.
Still.

If it's a modest house, why would you get insurance when the government is always paying out the arse to bail people out after floods?

If you own the asset outright you can choose to insure or choose to take the risk.

Not really...a home can flood due to backed up draining and a pond overflowing. It doesn't have to be a massive widespread event. A home flood can be very isolated in certain circumstances

I'm about 32' above the flood zone and the spill way of the lake nearby. I think I'm okay.
