The attendance zones aren't the problem, it is the fact that they only offer magnet/gifted programs at a few select schools and not at all the schools. We all know that every child in the OT is a magnet/gifted student but if you don't live near one of those schools, your kid will be bused. This takes away a good bit of the white kids that would otherwise make the white neighborhood school at least 70/30, and in turn now makes them more like 30/70 with the 40% difference being mostly the good kids now at other schools.

Secondly, we have too many elementary and middle schools, and our high schools don't offer near enough trade and skills training for those not in magnet/gifted.

Solution: Cut costs by consolidating schools. Identify 2-3 schools that are relatively close to each other, bulldoze them all down and build one bigger school with all kinds of crazy amenities and offer magnet/gifted at every school. Do not allow kids to be bused in if you live outside of that area just because you tested magnet/gifted. By the time kids make it to High School, we will know who should be in the college prep and who should be in the trades. They need to offer shop classes, welding, industrial tech, etc. so that those kids have a skill to go make a decent living.

Instead, we have a hand full of schools with bused in kids doing decent with a whole bunch of terrible schools.

I remember Mrs. Malone

Incredibly nice teacher. I am her daughter's age. We went to different HS but we reconnected in 2011. We got drunk one night and called her mom up on speaker phone.
And of COURSE she remembered my little bad arse well.

Funny enough Mrs Malone and husband live a few streets over from my parents now.

I have some pics of our Play. I'll post them here in a bump if I can find and scan them. Good memories from that school.

A terrible teacher at Mayfair was a big reason my parents got me into to Buchanan as feeder to MMM.

Marsellus or somthing I recall. This was 82-83 when my brother was at Mayfair.

Was she the one with the pretty good looking daughter? My older sister was friends with a Malone girl that I remember being pretty good looking. She lived in Jefferson Terrace as well.

Yea. Brandi is a cool chick. Reconnected when she came back from LA and was waiting tables at Chimes and going back to Nursing School and teaching dance(she's an amazing dancer).

I'm sure I know your sister as well. We stuck together from 1-8th going from JT to Buchanan to MMM. They went on to McKinley High.

Buchanan was the first school we had to get bussed to in the ghetto. Had Baumgartner for 4th and Miller for 5th. Mrs. MIller was awesome. Did y'all take the annual Miller/Edmonson Washington DC trip? I went in 1990. Then it was MMM then BRHS.

I didn't get to go. But my neighbor is your age and went. Anna B. Nice hippie chick nerdy as frick? Grew up down street from me.

I had Brown and Edmonson. I still remember asking my mom why PTA Meetings have to be in the day time at my new school. I didn't get it.

I was on the Buchanan playground when the Challenger happened.

how long has the school board been sitting on that piece of property?

Not sure. The surrounding homes were built in the early to mid - 70's so around 40 years I would imagine.
