Congratulations. I’m following in your footsteps. Plan to retire this year after 57 years practicing law. I’ve enjoyed it, actually.
Been reading up and assume you have too. Most men have built their lives around their careers. We both need to be active and involved in building this new life outside the office.
Good luck!

Congrats. You will enjoy not thinking about work and what you needed to do. The only thing I would suggest is have a plan to exercise at least 5 times a week. Me, I walk every day while listening to podcasts. People said I would get bored, but I love the alone time. Piddling is very underrated.

Congrats to you. I'm pretty sure I'll be joining you in 2 years and I'm looking forward to it. Some fishing, a little golf and tending to the yard sounds pretty great to me at this point of my life

Awesome! Congratulations.
(And sorry to hear about your wife! I’m sure reward of life with her almost as high as heaven)!

I am approaching end of 1st month of retirement (30yrs w/same company). In one word: incredible!

Decompression is healing! No weight on shoulders. Grass greener, music sounds more delicious, relaxation more peaceful, and sleep setting new records without alarm clock!

Enjoy!!

I retired from the Fire Department in 2017, worked there for 26 years so not as long as you but was there from 19 years old till 44. It was a weird feeling walking out the door, I pretty much grew up there. I can't lie, I shed a tear when I got into my truck and drove off for the last time. The sad thing is, I was there by myself when I left, didn't even get to say goodbye to anyone. The guy who relieved me that day came in a little early and an emergency run came in before I left, everyone was gone. I walked out by myself, we did have a crawfish boil the evening before and had a bunch of guys come by and say goodbye, but when I left, no one was there which was sad. I would have liked to say goodbye to my crew and give them a hug on the way out. I loved those guys like they were my own brothers. After 9 years gone, I still miss it. Not so much of the everyday crap that had to be done, I miss the comradery of hanging around the station, some of the EMS calls and the fires. The adrenalin rush was like no other, it was a great job for a kid out of high school. In other words, I miss the clowns and not the circus. Anyway, God bless and congrats on the retirement and I hope you can enjoy whatever you have planned for the next chapter in your life.

As with anything, lots of changes. I do think the 4th generation of this company is not quite as focused as the previous ones.

Man, congrats on your milestone! I retired about a year ago and it is a stellar life. My best years yet.

Your last day will be a hectic one….but try to take a minute to take it all in, as it is a day you will remember for the rest of your life.

Congratulations man!

I retired last year at 59, 37 years with the same company but immediatly returned to work in a contracting role. Going to double dip for a couple more before I hang it up for good.

Good luck with the adjustment! I am one month in to my retirement and starting to get used to it.

As an old friend of mine told me when I asked him a few yrs ago how retirement was...

"Well, retirement is not for everybody..., but its for me."
