That place was dying a slow death, now it's turning into a quick death.

What are the odds something like THIS happens?

Amazon and Mall Operator Look at Turning Sears, J.C. Penney Stores Into Fulfillment Centers

Isn’t that what they are trying to do at Cortana?

I thought Amazon was turning Cortana mall into that.

The were trying to get all of Cortana but I believe it fell through.

Covid is only going to hasten the collapse of more retailers I believe.

Tried to but Dillard's, who owns the building they are in, want too much money for the property according to Amazon. The mall owners were ready to put a bow on it but Dillards is in the way.

Well seeing that they're already building an Amazon distribution center in BR, I'd put the odds at .0001%.

Yeah but I can see it happening at Cortana before Mall of LA, especially with Dillard’s being the issue

I think it will take a couple of years for Mall of LA to have mass retail closures but admittedly I haven’t been there in years

Are there store closures within the mall?

yeah, I'd really trust Amazon to tell me who's treating them unfairly.

Also, Dillard's owns the land/building. They don't have to do a damn thing. If Amazon wants it, they can pay a fair price for it. And Dillard's knows part of that value is what it means to Amazon after the sale in combination with the rest of Cortana.

This is capitalism. I don't understand why folks are complaining about Dillard's and wanting Dillard's to provide some welfare for one of the biggest companies in human history.

Pretty sure the deal with Cortana is gone now. The mall owners seem to think that holding on to a vacant mall is more valuable as a write off than what they are willing to sell it for. Add that to the amount of security that Amazon would have to invest in for that location and I'm sure that Amazon probably spent about 90 seconds on the decision.

That deal fell through because a somebody bought one of the necessary parcels thinking that they could force Amazon to pay them a lot for it in order to finish the deal. Dillards was also holding out. Amazon realized what was going on and said no thanks. They instead went with a smaller facility in SBR.

Out here in LC. We got a little mall. People still shop that thing like it’s 1983. Tho they do have some empty spots in it.

The older I get, and I’m only 35, I enjoy retail shopping with the wife. Weird. I look for excuses not to buy things online and from small businesses preferably.

No company should have this much control over a single market

Those two projects were unrelated. The one off of Siegen is to replace the tent on Airline. It's a local distribution facility.

Cortana was going to be a 1 million/sq ft regional distribution center.

I’m 40 and still shop old school. When I need something my first reaction is to drove to a store and look for it.

Some but there aren't a bunch of empty storefronts in there. I work in the area and go eat lunch at Chick-fil-a occasionally. The quality of the stores seems to have slipped over the past 10 years or so.

Amazon wants a distribution center AND a fulfillment center in the Baton Rouge area.

Cortana was slated to be a fulfillment center that would be in addition to the distribution center they are building by Bethany.
