IIRC they had a contract with the city to replace the tent within a certain number of years with a permanent structure. That's what they are building by Bethany.

Blame Walmart for starting to idea. Amazon just realized they didn't need to build multiple buildings in every city and town in the nation to sell the same things Walmart was bogarting.

Without actually seeing the Mall of LA recently, I'd be willing to go out on a limb and say there are plenty of other malls which died a long time ago and are way better candidates to turn into an amazon fulfillment center.

I'm not sure either. It's a weird mix of stores now. A lot of the ones I remember are gone. Or maybe I've just gotten old and don't care about any of them anymore.

Dillards is probably the city's scapegoat. They are building the distribution center outside of BR city limits, and the fulfillment center outside of the parish limits (Port Allen area). Who wants to guess whose really to blame?

Landlord's have to make it appear that there's very little vacancy. When they start leasing space to temporary tenants it's already on down hill spiral that won't rebound.
Income dries up because temp tenants pay no operating costs and they are on month-to-month or short term agreements. It further hurts the mall because the value of the center decreases exponentially when there are no long term leases with national brand tenants rendering the property unsaleable.

Well LC also doesn’t seem to have a bunch of riff raff roaming the mall either. At least not when I go at 11:00AM on Saturdays
LCs mall seems about 1/5 the size of MoL too I think.
