Nearly exact same thing happened to me. Except I knew they were poisonous. I had taken them out of the yard to make sure thia didn't happen. My dog got out of her yard (which she hadn't done before or since), got into the trash can (which she had never been interested in before) and ate the roots. She survived, somehow. Despite our best efforts, sometimes these things happen. Thanks for sharing this with other people. Hopefully it will prevent it from happening to someone else.

my last house, day one I killed the sago palms. It messes dogs up. Though up until now I haven't heard of one dying from it directly. Hate to hear.

Sorry to hear that man. Don't blame yourself, you had no idea those plants were poisonous and you weren't even the one who planted them. Just shitty luck

So sorry for your loss. I will be digging up the Sago palms that I have in my flower beds.

My horror story involves the inadvertent poisoning of a family pet by my young daughter.....she was feeding our fox terrier green table grapes, which are terribly toxic to dogs. We lost the dog after an agonizing ordeal. We finally figured out what had happened and that grapes are toxic to dogs. Not a grape has been in my house since.

My dog from years ago had slow liver failure and we (and the vet)thought she had gotten into a bottle of ibuprofen or something. My parents have Sago palms in their backyard. I guess my dog was just eating those.

It is such a shame this had to happen and it didn't need to. I've been through this myself, so I feel the pain of the OP.

Please, as a PSA to all, do remember that there a number of plants that cause dogs and cats issues, but a few namely sago, oleander, and lantana are toxic and cause renal failure. Please rid of these plants and pass that info along. I was able to help a lady I saw at Lowes holding her little shite dog in one hand and a new sago palm in her basket. I told her about the toxicity of them and she said she had no idea. She put the sago palm back and bought some other plant. she had said she didn't even really care about the sago, just thought it would look OK in her yard.

Man, I am really sorry about your pup....that is just heartbreaking to hear.

Also, my Sagos have scratched and stuck me every time I work in the yard for the last several years and reading your story is the last straw...by Saturday afternoon, they will be by the curb waiting for the trash collectors.

I am incredibly sorry for your loss. We had sago palms and a golden retriever, but were advised to just leave them since he never seemed interested and digging them up could expose the most toxic parts. He never got into them - but if I ever got another dog in that house I would have them wiped off the face of the earth first

I know your pain man. We're not 100% that our dog is gone forever, but it appears she is. Be glad you got to say goodbye.

I've been in a funk since she went missing.
