Long story short, I had no idea Sagos were poisonous to dogs. I had two old Sago Palms that the previous owner to my house had planted. I was digging them up today and noticed my Boykin Spaniel was chewing on one of the pups growing off the root base. About 1.5 hours later, we noticed she wasn't devouring her food like normal so we Googled. Come to find out, Sagos are hugely poisonous to dogs. We induced vomiting with Peroxide immediately then brought her straight to our Vet. I'd say we got her to vomit maybe 1 hour after I first noticed she was eating the roots and to the Vet within 3 hours.

Update: Her kidneys' started to fail after her second plasma infusion so we ended it about 7 tonight.

We will miss you girl, there was not a more gentle, happy soul on this planet. I'm sorry it had to happen this way.

Thank you all for your genuine concern.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! Everyone who loves their pets and read this thread be aware that Sago Palms are basically Rat Poison to dogs and many other animals from what I now understand. If I had known, our girl would never have been outside while I was doing my yard work and would till be alive.

PS: In this one instance, I ask the OT to please refrain from telling me how shitty a person I am or that I'm an idiot for trying to save my dog.

I've heard they can be incredibly deadly if left untreated, however, I have never had them around my dogs.

quote:

Symptoms seen with ingestion of sago palms include:

Vomiting
Blood in feces
Bloody diarrhea
Icterus (yellow coloration of skin and gums)
Increased thirst
Increased urine
Bruising
Bleeding easily (coagulopathy, DIC)
Neurological signs such as depression, circling, paralysis, seizures, coma
Death

Causes
The symptoms seen are the result of liver damage caused by a toxin called cycasin that is found in the sago palm. Liver disease may lead to bleeding deficits (disseminated intravascular coagulation - DIC), that is, abnormal bleeding and clots in the bloodstream, and neurological abnormalities.

I hope your girl is okay.

A pup from a palm is basically a new plant growing from the root base but you knew that, thanks...

Yes, we are aware of that now. I just had to sign a DNR for my 5 year old dog so I'll never forget it either...

I had a young golden chew on some once. We were idiots and waited like three hours just to bring her in, and she made a full recovery. Hoping yours does too

This is what I'm hoping to hear. I'd say if you caught it within 3 hours, you're much more aware than most...

My seven year old lab started having liver issues and my vet asked if he had ever gotten a hold of a Sago Palm. That was the first I had heard that they were poisonous.

Hope your friend is okay. The good news is the liver can regenerate itself if she gets pat the immediate crisis.

Yep, that crap will kill a dog if untreated. Good catch and you did the right thing.

My sister's boxer ingested sago palm a few years ago and it was an awful experience. He lived for another year after that only because she spent lots of $ monthly for meds and he eventually died from liver failure. In all honesty he should have been put down sooner. I hope your experience is different than ours and that your pup recovers

My dogs have not, but I know dogs who have and did survive it. Prayers for your pup.

Same thing happened to our Weimeraner.
Did not know Sago was poisonous until she swelled up a few hours later.
Brought her to the hospital, and they treated her fine, no worries.

Man, I hope your dog is alright. Another plant that is toxic to dogs and cats are lilies. Had a friend lose a dog around Christmas because it ate a Peace Lily.
