Not filing an IFR flight plan does render the instruments inoperable.
Wut? Please tell me more, this is confusing.

With all of this news coming out, that entire family is about to get the Steve Bartman treatment.
Not even the same thing.

My suspicion is this was not the worst conditions this pilot has flown in (especially with Bryant on board)
Kobe flew at least once a week. No doubt they'd flown in similar conditions.

You have to wonder if he was forced to fly in those terrible conditions.

If you file a VFR flight plan, the air traffic controller comes to your plane and unplugs the instrument cluster. I thought everyone knew this.

Come on, you lying POS.
This is three times I've asked for a link.
I have made very few posts on the Poliboard. Exactly zero about this crash that I remember.
Now, post the link admit you are liar trying to flex those e-muscles for the rest your butt buddies on the board.

worked with a guy last night that is a liaison to the NTSB for us, he's not working this investigation, and we didn't talk in depth about this because we were busy conducting a check ride, but he said that, through talking with some of his NTSB contacts, that it appears the pilot did see what was coming and made evasive action/correction and came very close to avoiding the terrain, missed it by that much

Look like the "experts" here might have been wrong.
The pilot requested more altitude to get of a cloud bank (fog).
The helicopter then began to plummet.
Sounds like a problem developed and he wanted to set it down.
That's a pretty fast rate of descent. They were definitely headed down...AFTER HE REQUESTED PERMISSION TO CLIMB!

The NTSB has provided an account of the final moments of the flight, confirming that the helicopter plummeted for a full minute before hitting a hillside and bursting into flames.
Pilot Ara Zobayan requested clearance to increase altitude to climb out of a cloud bank, before making a sharp left descending turn.
Sounds like a problem developed and he wanted to set it down.

flown A list celebrities for 30 years and 90% of the time when he tells them it’s not ok to fly they overrule him and tell him they don’t care and need to get there ASAP
Yep, I would bet that m Kobe told the pilot that this was his tournament, opening day, and that he needed to arrive on time and to go ahead even in the inclement weather conditions.

possibly but I doubt if that influenced the pilot's decision to go

If the pilot's family is still on social media today, they should fully expect what's coming to them.

It could also be that the data was recording the chopper's movements AFTER it clipped the top of the hill

But you advise ATC and switch to IFR, or ask for a vector/routing back to VFR or VFR "on top" of cloud deck.

Doubt it. It was his action and he's dead. Doubt his family will suffer much from the public over it.
Since he flew this route many times, and the weather was so poor, how is it he was going that fast in the fog? I don't get it at all. Just seems so senseless.
